Domestic. “The human factor” caused the high-profile landslide in Stenungsund – an event that the media and experts blamed on “the climate”.

It was a large load on the ground as a result of excessive amounts of excavated material which caused the landslide in Stenungsund in September last year, when E4 was destroyed.

This was stated by Daniel Veivo Pettersson, chief prosecutor at the prosecutor's chamber in Uddevalla, at a press meeting in the police station in Gothenburg on Thursday.

– At the moment, we consider it grossly negligent to have placed so much excavated material on the site. Several investigative measures have been taken so far, including house searches and interrogations, but the preliminary investigation continues, he said.

Three people are now suspected of gross negligence, causing bodily harm and unauthorized environmental activities in connection with the incident.

Given hysterical climate headlines
The landslide caused quite a stir when it occurred – and the media stated that it was all due to “climate change”.

“The landslide in Stenungsund is a reminder that it is high time to intensify the work with what is called climate adaptation in Sweden, for example, stated Svenska Dagbladet's “climate reporter” Mikael Törnwall.

Dagens Nyheter's “climate editor” Peter Alestig wrote that the incident showed that we in Sweden “find ourselves in the middle of the climate crisis – and that it is high time that the risks Sweden faces are taken seriously”.

“HannaSofie Pedersen, expert at SGI” explained to SvD that Götaälvdalen and The west coast is one of ten areas “where climate change poses particularly great risks”, and that we should therefore expect more similar disasters in the future.
