A number of major tech companies, including Google, Samsung, Arm, Qualcomm and Intel, are working together on an open source software package for AI developers. Their goal is to disrupt Nvidia's market dominance.

The companies formed a group called the Unified Acceleration Foundation. The open source software that UXL develops ensures that AI code can run on any device with any chip. This way, AI developers are not tied to Nvidia's closed technology, such as the CUDA programming model.

The group told Reuters that the technology is based on OneAPI, a unified programming model from Intel that works with different architectures works. This allows developers to break free from limitations such as specific programming languages and other tools that tie them to Nvidia's architecture.

UXL wants to determine the technical specifications this year. There is no release date yet. Although the project is initially aimed at companies within the group itself, UXL says that Nvidia hardware and code will also be supported in the future.
