Samsung is expanding its Odyssey series gaming monitors with another model with a mini-LED backlight. The 43-inch Odyssey Neo G7 delivers 4K UHD with 144 Hz. The non-curved VA panel, in combination with the bright backlight, delivers a high contrast ratio.

The flat design of the Displays is a novelty for the models with mini-LED technology, which Samsung calls “Quantum Matrix”. Until now, this was only available in combination with a curved panel.

High contrast even for VA

The announcement does not state how many separately dimmable zones the mini-LEDs cover. The static contrast ratio is high at 4,250:1 even for a VA panel. The brightness should reach at least 600 cd/m² at the peak, because the monitor is certified according to DisplayHDR 600.

4K UHD with 144 Hz

The 3,840 × 2,160 pixels are displayed with a maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz. The Moving Picture Response Time (MPRT) is 1 ms, the response time when switching between gray levels (GtG) should be higher, but is not mentioned. The specification of 1 billion colors that can be displayed indicates a color depth of 10 bits, but this does not rule out an FRC simulation. Thanks to the Quantum Dot film, 95 percent of the large DCI-P3 color space is said to be covered.

Smart TV functions and gaming hub< /h2>

With an integrated processor, Tizen operating system and remote control, the monitor offers the functions of a smart TV and supports the direct streaming of films, series and games via corresponding apps for Netflix, Prime Video or GeForce Now, for example. Samsung calls the responsible user interfaces Smart Hub and Gaming Hub.

So this works without a connected computer, the monitor has built-in network (Ethernet, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth). The classic video inputs are DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1, plus two USB-A ports with 5 Gbit/s and a headphone output. There is no USB-C.

The 96 cm wide monitor can only be adjusted in inclination and, according to Samsung, requires around 55 watts in operation. The integrated speakers are specified as 2 × 20 watts. With these properties, not only the format is reminiscent of a television.

Price and availability

The Odyssey Neo G7 with 43 inches should be available at the end of February, Samsung has not yet announced a price recommendation for Germany.
