WinRAR 6.20: RAR5 compression on 8 or more threads will be faster

The new version 6.20 of the WinRAR packing program for data compression, distributed by WinRAR GmbH from Berlin, has now been released and includes, among other things, faster RAR5 compression for data that is particularly difficult to compress on modern main processors with eight or more threads on the desktop.

At home on many systems since 1995

The WinRAR packing program, which was further developed by the two developers Alexander Roschal and Jewgeni Lasarevich Roschal and has been distributed by Berlin-based WinRAR GmbH since 1995, is one of the few programs that can be used to create RAR archives natively, since this is is a proprietary format. In addition, the program, which is distributed as shareware, offers complete support for ZIP archives.

The classic becomes more powerful

The latest version 6.20, released exactly one year after WinRAR 6.10 according to the official release notes, offers improved multithread compression and the following improvements, especially for data that is difficult to compress:

  • An automatic detection of passwords for RAR 5.0 and ZIP archives
  • Additional archive analysis is performed when a RAR archive contains only part of files.
  • The Save original archive name and time option can be applied when saving.
  • The efficiency of the command Repair has been improved for mixed data blocks in RAR5 archives protected with recovery records.
  • Adding files to encrypted RAR5 archives is now prompted again if the password is incorrect.
  • A faster RAR5 compression of hard-to-compress data with processors with 8 or more threads.

There are also numerous other innovations, optimizations and error corrections that come with each new release.

For the operating systems macOS, Linux and FreeBSD there is a version available for download that is simply called RAR 6.20.
