#1 Support up to three displays at the same time

The previous Mac mini with M1 chip allowed you to connect to up to two displays at the same time. With the Intel variant that Apple still sold, you could connect a maximum of three displays. With the new M2 and M2 Pro versions, Apple has further expanded the possibilities. With the M2 version you can still connect two screens at the same time, but the resolutions and possibilities have been improved. These are the possibilities per version:

  • M2: Up to two displays; One display with resolution up to 6K at 60Hz via Thunderbolt One display with resolution up to 5K at 60Hz One display with resolution up to 4K at 60Hz via HDMI (this was one screen with resolution up to 6K at 60Hz via Thunderbolt one screen with resolution up to 4K at 60Hz over HDMI on the M1 version)
  • M2 Pro: < ul>
  • With three diplays: two screens with a resolution of up to 6K at 60Hz via Thunderbolt One screen with a resolution of up to 4K at 60Hz via HDMI
  • With two displays: one screen with a resolution of up to 6K at 60Hz via Thunderbolt One Display with a resolution of up to 4K at 144Hz via HDMI
  • With One Display: One Display with a resolution up to 8K at 60Hz óf a screen with resolution up to 4K at 240Hz

Compared to the predecessors, higher resolutions are supported at the same time and also a higher refresh rate.

#2 Up to 240Hz refresh rate

We already mentioned it: the support for higher image refresh. You can only connect a display to a maximum of 240Hz via HDMI on the M2 Pro version. Apple hasn't explicitly stated which HDMI version is included in this Mac mini, but it appears to be HDMI 2.1. A higher refresh rate results in smoother images, which can be important for video editing. Also good to know: The HDMI port on all new models supports multi-channel audio output.

#3 Up to 8TB storage (but only on the M2 Pro model)

Previously, you could equip the Mac mini to a maximum of 2TB, but with the new models this has been increased to 8TB. But note: you can only choose this option on the more expensive M2 Pro model. With the M2 version, the maximum storage is still 2TB and the storage starts at 256GB. With the M2 Pro you can therefore opt for a maximum of 8TB and the storage starts at 512GB. Incidentally, you pay a lot for the option of 8TB: an increase from 512GB (the standard) to 8TB will cost you no less than €2,760 extra. If you opt for 4TB, you pay €1,380 extra.

#4 More RAM options

In terms of RAM, you can now do something go further than before. The M2 version supports up to 24GB of central memory (was 16GB on the M1 version), while the M2 Pro variant can go up to 32GB. That is not as much as with the previous Intel version, where you could opt for a maximum of 64GB of RAM. The M2 Pro version also comes with 16GB of RAM as standard.

#5 Improved headphone jack

The headphone jack is still present on the Mac mini, even though Apple no longer has it on any iPhone or iPad. The new Mac mini (both M2 and M2 Pro) have a mini-jack connection with advanced support for high-impedance headphones. That is, it supports higher sound quality. The previous Mac minis (both M1 and Intel) had a regular mini-jack connection.

#6 Better Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

The Mac mini 2023 are the first Macs to support Wi-Fi 6E. This latest standard, which we previously found on the iPad Pro 2022, offers faster speeds and more reliable connections. In addition, the Mac mini is equipped with Bluetooth 5.3, instead of Bluetooth 5.0. Bluetooth 5.3 is more energy efficient and the connection is less affected by disturbances. The security and quality of the connection is also better compared to the predecessors.

#7 Color: only silver, no more space gray

Since 2018, Apple released the Mac mini in space gray, before switching to silver again in 2020 with the M1 version. But the space gray Intel version was still available and at the same time was a useful way to distinguish the two models. If you had the hope that Apple would go for space gray again for the more powerful M2 Pro version, you will be disappointed. Each new 2023 Mac mini will only come in silver, marking the end of the space gray Mac mini. Until Apple changes its mind (or maybe even releases a midnight version).

#8 Mac mini has become cheaper (but also more expensive)

Cheaper and more expensive at the same time, what exactly is that? The starting price of the cheapest Mac mini has become a bit lower. Previously, the M1 version was available from €799, but this has dropped to €719. This also applies to the more extensive M2 version compared to the more extensive M1 version, both with an upgrade to 512GB. The 512GB M1 variant cost €1,029, while the M2 version is now €949. In both cases an advantage of €80,-.

But with the M2 Pro version we see a higher price tag compared to the model it replaces. The Intel version that Apple still sold cost €1,259. But the new M2 Pro Mac mini 2023 will cost you no less than €1,569, so over €300,- more. Admittedly, you get a much better Mac mini for that, with a faster chip, better specs and the benefits of Apple Silicon.
