The Apple Watch does not yet have its own camera, but you can still use FaceTime on the Apple Watch. If someone FaceTimes you and you're not near your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you can also accept a FaceTime call on your watch.

Answering FaceTime on your Apple Watch

Apple has cleverly solved the lack of a camera by putting the caller on hold. This is how it works:

  1. If someone tries to reach you via FaceTime, your Apple Watch will ring.
  2. Tap the button with the three dots at the bottom right of the screen.
  3. Now choose the option Record with iPhone. You can also reply with a standard message.

  1. The caller sees that you have accepted the call, you can already talk. Video is added as soon as you record on your iPhone.
  2. You can then start the video call in peace on your iPhone, for example. If you don't know where your iPhone is, you can make it sound with the button at the bottom left, so that you can easily trace it.

Answering FaceTime on your Apple Watch with audio

In the above way, you answer a video call with your Apple Watch, so that you can continue the conversation with your iPhone. If you prefer to connect directly through your Apple Watch, you can convert the video call into an audio call:

  1. Your Apple Watch will ring if someone tries to reach you via FaceTime.
  2. The buttons to answer or reject the call appear on the screen.
  3. The text Answer as appears on the screen audio. Now tap the green button.

Start FaceTime conversation via your Apple Watch

If you don't have your iPhone or another device with a camera at hand, but you want to start a conversation with someone quickly, you can also call someone via FaceTime via your Apple Watch. Keep in mind that this will automatically be done via FaceTime audio. There are two ways to start a conversation.

Via Siri

The fastest way is via Siri. Simply say “FaceTime Tim” to call Tim directly via your Apple Watch with audio. It is important that you use the word “FaceTime” used instead of “call”, because otherwise the Apple Watch will start a normal phone call.

Via Phone app

You can also use the Phone app on the Apple Watch via Call FaceTime. It works like this:

  1. On the Apple Watch, open the Phone app.
  2. Find the contact you want to call.
  3. Press the large round call button.
  4. On the next screen, choose FaceTime audio.
