Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 & 4080: New firmware should eliminate problems when booting

The previously presented graphics cards of the new generation “Nvidia Ada Lovelace”, the GeForce RTX 4090 (test) and the GeForce RTX 4080 (test), tend to, depending on the hardware installed, during the boot process output a blank screen. The manufacturer is now responding to the problem with new UEFI/GPU firmware.

Blank screen may require new firmware

As Nvidia has now announced on its support website, when using the two graphics cards in combination with certain mainboards, a blank screen may be displayed during the boot process in UEFI mode until the operating system is fully loaded. In such cases, the updated Nvidia GPU UEFI Firmware Update Tool v1.2 should now be used.

Without the update, graphics cards in certain motherboards that are in UEFI mode could experience blank screens on boot until the OS loads.

Nvidia

Nvidia notes that the first thing to check is whether the motherboard BIOS is up to date. Also, alternative graphics card or integrated GPU is required for UEFI/GPU firmware update.

If you are currently experiencing a blank screen, please try one of the following workarounds in order to run the tool:

  • Ensure you are using the latest SBIOS from your mainboard vendor
  • Change the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy/CSM
  • Boot using an alternate graphics source

Nvidia

According to Nvidia, the Nvidia GPU UEFI Firmware Update Tool is designed both for the manufacturer's Founders Edition and for the custom designs of the board partners based on the GeForce RTX 4090 and GeForce RTX 4080. The tool recognizes whether a firmware update is necessary and then carries it out independently.

Only affected users should update

< p class="p text-width">Nvidia explicitly points out that the update and the new firmware should only be used for graphics cards that are affected by the problem.

This update should only be applied if blank screens are occurring on boot.
