Remains of upped clothing became a decisive find. DNA from the 19-year-old murder suspect was secured on a hoodie.

Two young gang criminal men – 19 and 20 years old – are now on trial for involvement in the murder. The fatal shooting took place in the middle of the afternoon on July 9 last year, on Marklandsgatan in Gothenburg.

The hair salon's surveillance footage shows two people dressed in dark running into the premises from a back door. It's open to create cross drafts in the salon because it's a hot summer day. The perpetrators are masked and each has a gun in their hands.

– The victim is shot from behind at close range. It is a brutal execution and it is clear that the perpetrators do not care that other people in the victim's vicinity may be hit by the shots, says Stefan Olofsson, head of investigations at the serious crime section in Greater Gothenburg, in a statement.

The 19-year-old is suspected of being one of the two shooters who shot the 22-year-old dead in the hairdresser's chair while other customers were sitting in the chairs next to him. The 20-year-old is suspected of aiding and abetting the crime. According to the indictment, he communicated with the shooters, kept an eye out and notified when the victim was in the salon. The 19-year-old shooter is also charged with attempted murder of the hairdresser who was cutting the 22-year-old's hair and with grossly illegal threats against a waiting customer. During the investigation, another suspected shooter has been questioned, but the criminal charges against him have been dropped due to insufficient evidence.

After the murder, the perpetrators disappear the same way they came. Left at the crime scene are eleven cartridge cases. The shooters flee into a wooded area and shortly afterwards the police are alerted to a small fire in a shed half a kilometer away. When the fire scene is investigated, the police make a decisive discovery.

– We find fabric remnants from clothes that have been set on fire. Although there is only a small amount of charred pieces of fabric left, the forensics manage to find DNA on the remains of a hoodie. It is the 19-year-old murder suspect's DNA that we find on the clothes that we believe were used in the murder, says Olofsson.

The preliminary investigation has shown that the fatal shooting was preceded by significant planning. Special crime phones have been used for communication in connection with the murder. Registry searches have also been done on cars that the murder victim used.

Early in the investigation, there were circumstances that suggested that the murder was part of the conflicts in the criminal environment in southwest Gothenburg. Therefore, local police personnel with knowledge of the current conflicts and personal knowledge have assisted the investigation from the beginning.

– The murder has a clear connection to the criminal groups in our area. The person who was murdered was previously part of the network to which the suspects now belong. That our investigations lead to prosecution is crucial to combating the criminal networks. Research shows that if the risk of going there for a crime is high, this is much more of a deterrent than a harsher prison sentence, says local police area chief Christian Nylén.

The trial in the Gothenburg district court starts on November 24.
