KDE Plasma 5.26.3: The Linux ecosystem for gamers, families and creative people

KDE Plasma and the applications known as KDE Gear – formerly KDE Applications – and optimized for the in-house desktop should form a free ecosystem for families and content creators. In addition to the optimized and bug-fixed KDE Plasma 5.26.3, the open source apps should meet this requirement.

The third edition of KDE Plasma 5.26

The developers from the KDE project, which emerged from and is financially supported by KDE e.V., have the third of a total of five with the latest version 5.26.3 Released product maintenance for KDE Plasma 5.26, which focuses, among other things, on the in-house “App Store” KDE Discover, the window manager KWin and the Plasma desktop.

The once again very extensive release notes also list optimizations and error corrections in the areas “Plasma Mobile” and “KDE Workspaces” as well as the system settings.

In addition, plasma sessions based on the Optimized the free display server protocol Wayland so that XWayland apps like Steam no longer crash when autoscaling for legacy apps is enabled. This problem has now been solved accordingly, so that the applications now scale to the desired size. Bug fixes have also been included in the release for OpenGL ES.

KDE Plasma 5.26.3 is already available for the in-house KDE neon and the plasma-focused KaOS (report) as well as some other Linux distributions for download from the corresponding repositories .

Focus on families and creators

With its curated offering of open source applications and community contributions optimized for the KDE ecosystem, KDE for Creators aims to expand the offering of KDE for Kids , which is already fully available in German as KDE for children.

While “KDE for Creator” with creative applications such as the open source painting program Krita, the video editor Kdenlive and associated tutorials is primarily intended to appeal to content creators, “KDE for Kids” primarily offers learning content and child-friendly entertainment.

Players are served under SteamOS

Players will also see KDE Plasma as the SteamOS 3.3 desktop on the Steam Deck, which speaks to the ever-growing mobile game console ecosystem.

The desktop mode that which allows the Steam Deck to be used as a fully-fledged plasma desktop, still has potential for optimization and could be better adapted to the handheld.

The next major release will be KDE Plasma 6 with Qt 6 in Spring 2023.
