Microsoft is subjecting its in-house PowerToys, an extremely extensive program collection of useful professional tools for the Windows 11 and Windows 10 operating systems, to further product maintenance. This time there are also two new system tools that show process dependencies, among other things.

Microsoft's toolkit for Windows

After Microsoft revived the collection of tools already known from the times of Windows 95 in September 2019 for Windows 10 and then for Windows 11 and in the meantime has gradually expanded it, PowerToys 0.64.0 is another product update of the powerful system suite with updates for the numerous little helpers and two new system tools.

The “File Locksmith” tool provides information about process dependencies and can use the context menu to check, for example, which process is preventing the deletion of files. The new “Host File Editor” enables editing of local configuration files in order to assign host names to an IP address.

The following 14 tools, modules and extensions of the program have been updated Collection:

  • Color Picker
  • Screen Ruler
  • Text Extractor
  • Always on Top
  • File Locksmith*
  • Mouse Utilities
  • Keyboard Manager
  • Video Conference Mute
  • Group Policy Objects
  • Hosts File Editor*
  • PowerToys Run
  • Quick Accent
  • FancyZones
  • Settings

*) included for the first time in PowerToys 0.64.0

Furthermore, with the release of PowerToys 0.64.0 the underlying developer tools, runtime environments and APIs have been migrated to the updated:

  • Windows App SDK 1.1.5
  • Microsoft .NET 6.0.10

The official release notes on the GitHub developer platform also list the obligatory optimizations and bug fixes that come with each new release.

Developers are also gradually porting more and more tools from the WinUI 2 to the WinUI 3.

Tools for the context menu of Windows 11

Little by little, the two-level context menu of Windows 11 will also be upgraded with quick access to various PowerToys. The ImageResizer and PowerRename as well as the host file editor (“Host File Editor”) can be found even faster by right-clicking in the context menu of the current Microsoft operating system and can therefore be used particularly comfortably without having to start the entire program collection. More tools are to follow in future releases.
