Suzuki S-Cross Hybrid 140 V & egrave; the new proposal of a range that is becoming more and more; full of options and variations. Faced with a strategy with very few installations and all complete, in fact, the Japanese have decided to propose more; hybrid powertrains, and this might create some of confusion between the mild hybrid model at 48V and this new full hybrid at 140V with battery and motors more & ugrave; powerful, but we will see everything in detail in the chapter dedicated to the operation of this Suzuki hybrid.

In a market context where the average of CO2 emitted, from the beginning of 2022 to today, is of 119.9 grams, Suzuki is perfectly in line with 119.8 grams continuing with its omnipresent but never excessive electrification strategy (they do not have a & quot; full electric & quot;). Emissions in August 2022 only slightly increased for Suzuki (120 grams), but the strategy paid off because the average increase in the Italian market brings the figure to 121.5 grams, a sign that the incentives did not have the desired effect. In fact, there are still many funds for electric cars given that Italy has rewarded the less virtuous incentive bands (between 61 and 135 grams per km).

For this reason the Japanese continue with their strategy, convinced that electric cars have three obstacles to overcome in order to increase their diffusion: the price of purchase, on average more; high, the charging network , not sufficient if we are talking about public columns and still too little widespread among domestic users who could install a wallbox, and autonomy , considered by many still not sufficient because & eacute; the average buyer is used, with diesel, to figures between 700 and 900 kilometers with a full tank.

S-Cross Hybrid, a car of Hungarian production (together with Vitara), is therefore presented with the cards of the complete hybrid, of the true 4×4 (with the propshaft), and with the technology for assisted driving , following exactly the same path inaugurated by his sister Vitara (here our test).

3 MOTORS, 3 BATTERIES: HOW DOES THE 140V HYBRID WORK?

Suzuki's hybrid uses different technologies depending on the model it is on. mounted. Starting with the small ones, Ignis and Swift, Suzuki uses the 12V micro hybrid. We then move on to 48 Volt on SUVs and Swift Sport and 140V on S-Cross Hybrid, up to 355V on Plug-In (Across).

On S-Cross Hybrid 140V there are three engines : the thermal & egrave; the K15C 1.5 Dualjet . It is a gasoline & quot; Aktinson-like cycle & quot; with a compression ratio of 13: 1 and with the valve opening and closing mechanism that simulates the cycle it is inspired by. The four-cylinder 102 hp and 138 Nm & egrave; flanked by the 24.6 kW (60 Nm) electric motor and another small electric (ISG) which acts as a generator .

Total emissions ? 118 grams on 2WD and 132 grams per km on 4WD, numbers that allow both versions to enter the 61-135 incentive range which should restart in January 2023 as announced by the previous plan.

Electricity (MGU) & egrave; connected to the gearbox via a reducer that increases its torque and transfers 152.7 Nm to the drive shaft. The ISG recharges the 12V battery and acts as a starter and the ASG gearbox & egrave; a robot that, working with the electric, eliminates the problem of gaps in the gear change making it more; close to an auto experience.

There are also three batteries : 12V lead-acid for services, 12V lithium positioned halfway; chassis and 140V in the trunk . The 140V battery is; lithium-titanate, promise of greater longevity, safety and better capacity; power supply.

The 140V system has six stages of operation, depending on the situation. The ignition takes place with the ISG or with the starter depending on the conditions, the gear can be managed by the electric motor when the battery is; charge and there are ideal conditions. In addition, between 60 and 90 kilometers per hour, the traction can; be fully supplied by electricity until the charge is exhausted. In release the MGU acts as a generator to recharge the 140V battery.

It then continues with the march through the thermal engine and, in these cases, the battery & egrave; ready to go into action when there are requests for surplus power, a situation in which thermal and electric work together (for example during an overtaking or in sport mode). In addition, the gaps in the thermal are filled, between one shift and the other when the clutch & egrave; open, by the electric motor for a longer gear; fluid.

Finally the last phase is the one in which the thermal travels at speed; cruising, it has power to & quot; sell & quot; and, via the MGU, recharge the battery if necessary. The ECO mode button is used to maximize efficiency by letting it work automatically (power response with respect to the throttle control).

HOW DOES IT GO? ROAD TEST

The first approach with Suzuki S-Cross Hybrid 140V allowed to test its performance in different conditions, from the highway to the offroad , passing through uphill and extra-urban roads. Let's start with the engine: S-Cross Hybrid is not; the SUV for those looking for exaggerated performance, rather it is configured as the honest car that gets along even uphill, but needs to play more; with the gearbox. Here & egrave; automatic (robotic), so there is no stress for the driver.

The electric helps as a support, but it is not; never predominant. After a short time you understand how to & quot; force it & quot; intervention, but it is a job for fine feet because & eacute; there is no a mode EV. It is exploited during sailing or mainly in the city. Also, and here & egrave; more perceptible, the electric from one hand to overcome the intrinsic limits of the robot: when the actuator presses the clutch, the electric motor intervenes to cover that hole of a few moments to ensure a more ride; fluid.

It doesn't work miracles, mind you, but & egrave; a nice advantage if we consider that the robotic & egrave; more light, costs less, requires less maintenance but, at the same time, manages to be a bit more fluid of equivalent systems not assisted by the electric, all without having to suffer the scooterone effect of the Toyota planetary.

In the steepest climbs extreme the car takes its time: facing a tooth in offroad, for example, you do not climb power, rather you rely on all-wheel drive with constant gas and letting the ALLGRIP system work, with the transmission shaft and a reducer placed after the electric with the aim of multiplying the torque by 2.5x. When you exaggerate the clutch tends to heat up, but it only takes a few moments for the fluids to cool and travel again.

On the other hand the overall power is; of maximum 115 CV, nothing transcendental but the right answer for those looking for an everyday car, set to be the most possible attentive to consumption.

S-Cross Hybrid 140V must therefore be seen as the precise answer to a need: it is not; the SUV from big trips with full load, in that case better to go at least on something from 110/130 hp and with a torque of 250 Nm, but it moves casually in a scenario that also includes a little bit; of the motorway, where in Sport overtaking & egrave; easy (never to tear off the face) and the recovery & egrave; always aided by the electric in mode & quot; power assist & quot ;, the one that compensates for a clearly calibrated thermal to reduce emissions and consumption.

Precisely on consumption, the tests showed an interesting range: on a longer trip; along with so much highway you can & ograve; register an average of 5.5/6 liters every 100 kilometers if you keep up with the speed; at maximum 120 km/h. Trying it to put maximum stress on the engine, including off-road vehicles, about fifteen kilometers of motorway and a ride in the hills, the maximum consumption & egrave; state of 6.9 liters/100 km without holding back at all and without any precautions (almost all in Sport mode). Not bad for an all-wheel drive car.

It should be noted that the Sport & egrave; the mode mandatory to have an acceptable answer, otherwise in mode & agrave; Auto the system is very conservative (it is fine in the city and in the suburbs, but to overtake it is better to take a leap in Sport). Same goes for the mode Eco, where the exponential of the gas pedal is calibrated in such a way as to greatly dampen the foot input: imagine it as if there were two sponges between foot and pedal.

Finally, let's see the dynamic behavior: S-Cross has an honest frame, solid even off-road where it does not suffer bending and combined with a fairly classic suspension scheme: MacPherson and torsion bar rear. Nothing sophisticated, but nothing that can be undermined given the size of the engine and a complete suite of electronic controls that intervene as punctual as a Swiss watch.

Suzuki has always had an extreme passion for safety, even on two wheels the button that deactivates the controls never completely clears them. And here & egrave; the same: activate the mode & agrave; Lock in offroad (which divides the torque at 50:50 between front and rear), I deactivate everything to grant more; skidding on the wheels and I still see that the dirt road (uphill and with many holes) is still tackled with a little electronic assistance. On the other hand, this is not an off-road vehicle prepared for extreme feats, and it is; therefore it is likely that the average driver will not have; never the necessity; to go completely in & quot; off & quot; for that one-in-a-million situation where the “ manual '' guide & egrave; the only way to get out of an off-road hitch.

In all circumstances, the S-Cross turns out to be an easy, pleasant and soft car: it absorbs holes quite well, it is not; never stiff or difficult in reactions, it limits the roll a lot to be an SUV and has a steering with good precision. The steering wheel load is not; never as a sportswoman, not even in Sport it hardens, but in most everyday situations you never reach the crossing of the arms, thus avoiding to take your hands off, and the car has a good readability; of the road.
