iOS 16 has barely been released when Apple is already speeding up iOS 16.1. The beta of iOS 16.1 is now available and several new functions have already been discovered from the first test version. These include some previously deferred iOS 16 features, as well as some new improvements.

  • Battery percentage for more iPhones
  • Live Activities
  • < li>Edit Lock Screen and Home Screen

  • Matter Support
  • Clean Energy Charging
  • Refreshed Screenshot Menu
  • Uninstall Wallet App
  • Game Center
  • Focus Info in Assignments
  • Stage Manager Enhancements (iPadOS 16.1)

#1 Battery percentage to more iPhones

The new battery percentage in iOS 16 gives you an at-a-glance view of how much percent is left in your iPhone. But this feature didn't come to all iPhones right away. The iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini had to do without. The reason for this was never given by Apple, but it may have been due to the lower screen resolution on the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 and limited screen space on the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini. Anyway: in iOS 16.1, these models also get the battery percentage. It can be turned on via Settings > Battery.

View battery percentage on iPhone and iPad: Here's how to make it visible

You can make the battery percentage of the iPhone and iPad visible, so that you can estimate more accurately how long the battery will last.

#2 Live Activities are coming

When announcing iOS 16, Apple introduced the new Live Activities feature. These are live notifications at the bottom of the access screen where you can, for example, see the standings of a sports match or see where your ordered taxi is. Apple already announced that the feature would be released later and now it has been added back in iOS 16.1. This can be seen in the TV app, among other things. Developers can also add it to their apps.

#3 Edit lock screen and home screen

When you edit a lock screen, from iOS 16.1 you will be given the option to choose between your lock screen and home screen. Hold down your finger on the lock screen, tap Customize and a new screen will appear where you can choose to customize your lock screen or your home screen right away. Unfortunately, it's still not possible to set an Apple wallpaper for your Home screen if you're using a custom photo for your Lock screen.

#4 Matter support

In iOS 16.1, the first signs of Matter are visible. Matter is the new smart home standard that will be available this fall. This ensures that you can add Matter-enabled accessories to the Home app, without the need for standard HomeKit support. In the Settings, under General you will now find an option Matter accessories, where you will see a list of accessories that have been added to a connected service. The More information button does nothing at the moment.

#5 Clean Energy Charging (US only)

In the US, Apple is adding a new feature called Clean Energy Charging. This setting ensures that your CO2 footprint is reduced when charging. The iPhone only charges when a sustainable source of energy is available. This way you can charge your iPhone in a more environmentally friendly way, but because Apple needs information from other parties, this function only works in the US. This setting is not visible in Europe.

#6 Refreshed screenshot menu

When taking a screenshot, you can tap the preview at the bottom left. You will then enter the editor and tap Done at the top left, you will see a number of options. This menu has been overhauled. Instead of options at the bottom of the screen in iOS 16.0, you will find the menu in iOS 16.1 at the top left with corresponding icons. See the screenshots below for the difference.

#7 Delete Wallet App

As we wrote earlier, you can delete the Wallet app from iOS 16.1. If you don't use Apple Pay and don't have loyalty cards, discount coupons or other cards in the Wallet app, you can delete the app from your iPhone. Keep in mind that the app is hidden as it were. Apple is probably doing this because of the criticism that Apple Pay is the only allowed mobile payment solution. While no other services are available yet, uninstalling the app will give you more choice to use it or not.

As of iOS 16.1, you can ditch the Wallet app

One of the apps you'll no doubt use is the Wallet app (formerly Passbook). In iOS 16.1, you get the option to uninstall this app for loyalty cards, tickets, and the like.

#8 Game Center: easier for friends to find

An option called Allow friends to find you has now been added in Game Center settings. If you turn this on, your friends can look up your account based on the name in their address book. Game Center looks at the email address and phone number associated with your Apple ID.

#9 Focus info in Assignments app

There is a new task in the Assignments app called Get Current Focus. You can add this task to your assignment so that you can associate certain actions in an assignment with an active Focus mode. If no focus is active, this task will not yield any results. This task allows for more advanced commands, especially if you are a heavy user of Focus mode.

#10 Stage Manager improvements (in iPadOS 16.1)

Finally, Apple has made some changes to Stage Manager, the upcoming feature of iPadOS 16. There is now a button that allows you to add more windows to your workspace, it has become easier to view all open windows of the same app (by clicking icon in the dock) and you can drag windows from the iPad to an external display when using Stage Manager. Stage Manager is the main feature that iPadOS 16 has been delayed, so we'll see the first tweaks in this beta.

iOS 16.1 is expected sometime in October, along with iPadOS 16.1. In the case of iPadOS 16.1, it is the first public version of iPadOS 16. Apple will probably also release macOS Ventura around that time. In the near future you will read in our article about the beta of iOS 16.1 as soon as a new test version is ready.
