Brighter OLED display for the iPhone 14

There was no successor to the iPhone 13 mini at the far-out event; instead, Apple is now also using the sizes of 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches previously reserved for the Pro series for the cheaper smartphone, each from one to 1,200 cd/m² bright OLED display, which retains the classic notch of recent years in the upper area, but now accommodates a new selfie camera with a larger 12 MP and aperture f/1.9, which has been expanded to include an autofocus for the first time.

Bigger pixels for the main camera

A new wide-angle camera moves in at the rear, which remains at 12MP but now has 1.8µm pixels and offers a wider f/1.5 aperture, which should improve the camera's capabilities, especially in low light. Apple calls the new pipeline for processing the recordings “Photonic Engine” and generally promises better results. On the one hand, optical image stabilization with sensor shift is used for image stabilization, on the other hand there is a new action mode especially for video recordings, which is intended to use the entire sensor, i.e. it carries out a crop on it via digital stabilization.

A15 Bionic with 5-core GPU

Under the hood of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus is still the A15 Bionic from 5 nm production, as suspected in advance, but this time the cheaper model also comes with the one known from last year's iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max Chip with full Penta GPU expansion is used, which offers 25 percent higher graphics performance. The CPU and other key data of the chip are already known from the previous year.

Satellite communication for emergencies

In the area of connectivity, the satellite communication already expected for last year is added. The smartphone does not have the usually thick antenna of a satellite phone, but has to be aligned directly in the direction of a satellite outdoors. Apple has integrated an alignment assistant for this process. The mode is designed for emergencies and not normal communication with the smartphone, so that only short messages can be sent. For a number of emergencies, Apple provides ready-made messages to choose from to get in touch with an emergency center even faster. Ground relay stations can convert the messages into regular calls to contact departments that do not support text messaging. The service will initially only be offered free of charge for two years in the USA and Canada with the purchase of an iPhone 14.

Longer battery runtimes of up to 100 hours

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus also have longer battery life, which is now in the range of last year's Pro versions. For offline video playback and streaming, the devices come to 23 and 20 hours for the smaller model and 26 and 20 hours for the large version. For audio playback, Apple specifies 80 and up to 100 hours – the highest value so far, which even the iPhone 14 Pro Max can't match, but which performs better in video playback.

iPhone 14 (Plus) starts at 999 and 1149 euros

The iPhone 14 is available for pre-order starting September 9th at 2pm CET with prices starting at €999 in Blue, Purple, Midnight, Polarstern and Product (Red) colors with 128GB of storage, while the iPhone 14 Plus will be available in the same colors on the same day starts at 1,149 euros. The iPhone 14 is scheduled to be launched on September 16th, while the iPhone 14 Plus will not be released until October 7th. Further technical details and prices for more memory can be found in the table at the end of the article.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max

The major innovations are the iPhone 14 Pro and Reserved for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which will again be made of stainless steel instead of aluminum and will be offered in dark purple, gold, silver and space black. The design focuses on the new true-depth camera system, which replaces the notch used since the iPhone X.

< h2 class="text-width text-h2" id="section_dynamic_island_im_display_loest_notch_ab">Dynamic Island in the display replaces notch

Instead of “Notch”, which Apple has never officially used as a designation, the company is now talking about a “Dynamic Island”, because it not only hides the previous sensors for Face ID and the selfie camera, including a proximity sensor, behind the OLED panel but also all sorts of animations for Apple Pay notifications, charging, AirPods, music, messages and more. The “island” serves as a starting point for numerous animations, which initially start in small format and grow out of the island for further information. The OLED panel ensures that perfect black can be displayed and that the area between the sensor elements is completely hidden.

< h2 class="text-width text-h2" id="section_oleddisplays_mit_2000cdm_und_alwaysonfunktion">OLED displays with 2,000 cd/m² and always-on function

At 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, the OLED screens retain the sizes of the predecessor, but now have narrower edges to the stainless steel frame. Apple has adjusted the resolutions accordingly, as can be seen from the table at the end of the article. In addition, the displays can become even brighter. Apple specifies up to 1,000 cd/m² regular, up to 1,600 cd/m² in HDR mode and up to 2,000 cd/m² as peak brightness in outdoor mode. Thanks to improved LTPO technology, an always-on screen with a refresh rate of 1 Hz is also available for the first time in order to display important status information even when the screen is “off”.

A16 Bionic is hardly faster, but more economical

The pro smartphones are powered by the new A16 Bionic with 16 billion transistors from a previously unknown production – there are 5 nm or 4 nm in the room. Performance comparisons to the A15 Bionic were only extremely limited for the presentation, instead Apple has once again turned to the unnamed competitor compared. The A16 Bionic comes again with a 6-core CPU, which consists of two performance and four efficiency cores. The P cores are said to provide the fastest CPU on the market and consume 20 percent less than before. No increase in performance is mentioned for the E-Cores either, but they are the most efficient E-Cores on the market. The GPU again has five cores and gets a 50 percent faster memory connection.

48 MP camera with quad-pixel array

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max get a new sensor for the primary wide-angle camera after many years with 12 MP, which comes to 48 MP with a 4:1 pixel binning, resulting in 2.44 µm pixels. The image output is 12 MP by default, but the full 48 MP can be accessed in Apple ProRAW without pixel binning. The new 48MP sensor is 65 percent larger than that of the iPhone 13 Pro, Apple says. Users should be able to take up to “twice better photos” with the new camera, which now has a focal length of 24 mm and an aperture of f/1.78.

Camera app with four focal lengths

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max now offer four focal lengths to choose from in the camera app, although only three physical cameras are still installed. A new double zoom takes place via the 48 MP sensor and is thus carried out purely digitally with an emulated focal length of 48 mm for 12 MP photos. The wide-angle camera is equipped with second-generation optical image stabilization with sensor shift. On the true 12MP telephoto, Apple performs a 3x optical zoom to a 77mm focal length at f/2.8, employing classic optical image stabilization with no sensor shift. The third camera with 12 MP is again an ultra-wide-angle lens with 13 mm at f/2.2, which, thanks to autofocus, is again responsible for macro photos in extremely close-up ranges.

Cinema mode in cinematic 24 FPS expanded

Although the primary camera offers a higher resolution of 48MP, which tops out at 33.2MP for 8K video, Apple keeps it as a maximum of 4K to 60FPS with HDR. New for the cinema mode is the extension for optional 24 instead of 30 FPS including HDR to give the recordings a cinematic look. ProRes video recordings are also possible, where the maximum is 4K with 30 FPS or Full HD with 30 FPS for the memory configuration with 128 GB. You can also switch to a new action mode with even stronger digital stabilization on the iPhone 14 Pro (Max).

Longer battery runtimes and satellite for Emergencies

As can already be seen from the table for the iPhone 14 (Plus), Apple is also increasing the battery life of the Pro models, although the differences here are smaller with a few hours more. In addition, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max in the US and Canada also support extended connectivity via satellite.

iPhone 14 Pro is starting 1,299 euros

The iPhone 14 Pro is available for pre-order starting September 9th in deep purple, gold, silver and space black, with prices starting at €1,299 with 128GB. For the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple estimates 1,449 euros with 128 GB. Further configurations and technical details can be found in the table. The market launch of both models is planned for September 16.
