Logitech G713 in the test: “Aurora Collection” aka outrageous marketing

Logitech's lifestyle drive captures the gaming segment. With the compact G713 and its wireless sister G715 from the “Aurora Collection”, the tenkeyless format should be chic, which can be colorful with accessories, and also ensure gender fairness and better gaming. The result is outrageous.

An overview of the Logitech G713 TKL Aurora Collection

With the G713 and the wireless sister model G715, Logitech is now also trying to stimulate purchases in the gaming segment with color design. The product contradicts this plan at first glance: the keyboard without a number pad is only supplied in a neutral, atypical, but hardly noticeable white. Colorful is only available as an accessory, because the top of the housing is only held in place magnetically and can therefore be easily replaced. Logitech offers alternatives in pink and green as well as color-coordinated keycaps and cables in the online shop.

The “faceplate” can be easily removed and replaced or designed
only with magnets
The selection of accessories is still small

Color aside, Logitech delivers a fairly standard keyboard with media keys and a “cloud-shaped” palm rest. Next on the list of features are other, immaterial things: A “gender-inclusive” design apart from a gaming market tailored to men and social change via gaming through a product designed under the motto “women first, but gender inclusive” is offered, explains Logitech in press material.

Women first, but gender inclusive!

Gender-neutral vs. “Women first” vs. inclusive

One might well ask whether it isn't being a little outrageous when Logitech describes the color white as “gender neutral”, the series is also marketed as tailored to women, with the color pink and a palm rest in a soft “cloud shape” then but gender stereotypes are served. If the chalice of baby-blue accessories passes by the shopper, that's probably because, as the product pages and marketing for the Aurora Collection make clear, female buyers in particular have been chosen as the target group. The color green plays the role of a fig leaf, after all there are input devices with this tone, but the Blue Yeti microphone only comes in white and pink.

Incidentally, inclusive is not possible, but sexism is. Logitech announces “changing gaming for the better” – it works by offering women stereotypical, role-affirming clichés for identification. Just the right tool in an industry struggling with misogynist tendencies. Sexy!

The exaggeration to gender-neutral input device can also justify why the keyboards are only in white and not also in colored in the retailer shelves. If you want a keyboard designed by Logitech under the motto “woman first”, i.e. pink, you can buy it, the motto seems to be – lucrative for the supplier, because 20 euros for a top shell and around 40 euros for a set (TKL!) -Keycaps are sporty priced. Corsair sells complete sets of 105 caps for €35 direct, with PBT sets starting at €20 in stores. The question of why is answered by a probably eternally timeless meme with “Money!” as briefly as it is accurate. And nothing makes more “money” than the combination of premiums on design and gender-specific products. After all, pink costs more when it comes to razors. The product pages show that pink is understood as a woman's color: the yellow keyboard indicates the correct gender, yellow is intended for men.

Inclusion with basic buttons

In the G713 there are only GX buttons in tactile and linear tuning, which are based on Cherry MX Red and Brown. In the button hierarchy at Logitech, however, they are more in the lower midfield. But “more important than competition” are for the target group “comfort, accessibility and joy of playing”, the presentation materials continue, it is about the joint, cooperative experience of a game. In women's games, shots aren't shot quickly. You can also call it that if the product offers less than “hyper-fast” gaming peripherals and at least keeps the price the same. Parodies of this way of thinking seem almost like documentaries.

The GX buttons are labeled “Long Hua” and are by Kailh
Your vote is similar to Cherry MX Brown
The lighting lacks “unearthly” qualities

Behind the tested GX Brown is another variant of Cherry's MX Brown that differs in nuances. With Logitech, the pressure point can be felt more clearly, and it is also stretched a little more. In addition, there is a slightly increased resistance, which makes the buttons a bit more difficult to operate. This makes it less likely that the entire stroke will be used, and the button feels a little softer in direct comparison with MX Brown. As far as the quite pleasant characteristics are concerned, Logitech once again has a good hand.

The keys also include “unearthly RGB lighting”. The illumination with brightness gradient in the lower area of the key cap corresponds exactly to the level that every MX-type key also offers. The flashing lights are flashing just like everywhere else. Underground.

everyday experiences

Despite all the criticism of Gaga marketing, the G713 isn't as stupid as the trappings lead you to believe. The rounded edges, for example, are extremely pleasant to the touch and you would hardly want to be without them. The pink accents on the product images are pleasing even with a broken X chromosome. Especially with the accent color, the keyboard looks friendly, bright, open and stands out pleasantly from the gaming mainstream. Not a bad impression and one that would also have an advertising, but perhaps less price-boosting character as an outstanding feature.

Color accents create a chic Look (Image: Logitech)

The keyboard itself isn't wrong either. The layout inherited from the Logitech G915 TKL makes sense. However, the scroll wheel and deep additional keys cannot be reached optimally because you have to “reach around” the high keys in front of them. Solutions for this would be manifold. Logitech already has the best in use in the form of flat buttons or at least flat keycaps, which are used in the MX Mechanical Mini or the G915.

The still clearly perceptible rattling when typing no longer corresponds to the possible level, but is relatively close to the current reference, which is a bit duller, i.e. less perceptible. Thanks to the closed backdrop, the keyboard inherently absorbs sound better than open constructions that are often used by its competitors. Even if the G713 performs well in this aspect: it lacks the special or outstandingly executed feature that has to exist in the price range.

Logitech G713 (GX Brown)
Typical: The keycaps are poorly illuminated in the lower area
The underbody light looks nice
The drop in brightness is particularly noticeable in the dark

Logitech convinces with the palm rest, although there is small print again. The rubberized surface gets slightly sweaty, but it is functional. The ball of the hand slides into the depression and lies securely, and thanks to the flat surface, the hands also lie significantly higher and more comfortably than with “gaming” pads with a triangular profile.

The advertised accessibility is also not that far off. How difficult can it be to configure the lighting? “Yes,” says Logitech's software. The separation into a software mode and an “integrated memory mode” is a stumbling block. Basically, the latter cannot be configured at all, only a profile can be transferred. But you have to change the profiles in software mode. This configuration level can only be reached by double-clicking on the product image in the G-Software – but only if the storage mode is not active. Otherwise it goes automatically into the settings. It took a while for the editor to internalize this scheme – but with a damaged X chromosome he is not part of the product's intended target group anyway.

Only the default blinking effect can be selected in save mode, not even static lighting
LEDs can be programmed easily and individually in software mode
Awkward: with key assignments must be clicked on the small dot

In addition, not much more can be set on the G713 than on cheap Logitech keyboards for the office area. Gaming mode and LEDs can be extensively configured, but macros and key assignments only fit on the F-keys. Levels can be switched permanently via FN, but use as an FN key combination does not seem to be intended. This is meager compared to compact keyboards in the segment, which can be fully programmed on two, three or more levels.

Conclusion

Technology is becoming fashionable, that's what the classification into a “collection” says, that's what trendy pastel colors say. First of all, nothing can be said against that. After all, design is a matter of taste; an alternative to martial, angular and dark input devices is even to be welcomed. In fact, the design makes a friendly, cheerful impression. Friendliness at the desk? Would like more of that.

The packaging is not that friendly. Addressing them becomes a duty because fine words have to justify a price that the product cannot justify. It was long overdue that Logitech also wanted to make money from the trend towards expensive, colored accessories, but the turbo surcharge and the way it was advertised are a bad combination. Logitech wants to shine morally and shows a diverse world, but practically does exactly the opposite of the announcement: existing prejudices and stereotypes are confirmed. Unfortunately, the radiant “Aurora Collection” turns out to be a “Prejudice Collection” that is supposed to make money with gender marketing.

170 euros + accessories? The G713 doesn't offer enough for that.

So the pure product isn't bad, just way overpriced, but it falls short of the competition when it comes to features. 170 euros plus possibly 20 to 60 euros for the color design seem excessive, even for Logitech, where recommended retail price and street prices are often far apart. With a significant discount, the keyboard would have a place on the market, but only with difficulty in the luxury segment at a giga price.

For around 130 euros, the Ducky One 3 TKL (test of the SF model) is a better quality product with more, sensibly implemented properties such as hot-swap buttons and extensive configuration options, if you need them. The manufacturer's “Quack Mechanics” deliver what they promise, which also creates a kind of fairness. There are already colorful and pink variants, black and white will follow. With the rest of the budget, you can buy a lot of wrist rests made of different materials and key caps, should the need arise. Only noisy world rescue is not sold there – you can be human and just choose what you like.
