The Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), a compatibility layer for running executable Linux program files in ELF format, so-called executables, and its user interface have received an update. The safe mode (“Safe Mode”), a recovery feature for damaged distributions, has also been added.

Microsoft is continuing to expand support for Linux from

Microsoft discovered its love for Linux back in 2016. In the same year, the company joined the Linux Foundation, a non-profit consortium that supports the growth of Linux. At the same time, the company published the wallpaper that served as the cover image for this message (“Microsoft ❤️ Linux”). In addition to the very generous financial support and promotion of open source, the Windows subsystem for Linux, which was also launched in 2016, serves as a token of love.

Product maintenance for the subsystem

According to the official release notes on the GitHub developer platform, the following innovations, optimizations and error corrections have been incorporated into the compatibility layer, which from now on has the new version number 0.66.2, and its optional graphical user interface.< /p>

  • Add Safe Mode option to %userprofile%.wslconfig
    • This change introduces the concept of Safe Mode to WSL which disables many features and is intended to be used to recover distributions that are in bad states.
  • Update wsl.exe to not create stdin/stdout/stderr relay threads if the std handle is not present
  • Do not set window title in wsl.exe [GH 8701]
  • Update Microsoft.WSLg to version 1.0.42
    • WSLg: archive wslg-notify debuginfo
    • rdp: upstream coding style changes
    • rdp: Multihead refactor
    • xwayland: Fix some xwayland focus bugs
    • xwayland: fix default override window position back to (0, 0).
    • xwm: Don't send synthetic ConfigureNotify to windows that were mapped O-R

New graphics driver also for Wayland

Updates include the remote desktop client (MSRDC), which has been upgraded to version 1.2.3401, and Microsoft's in-house graphics acceleration for the WSL, the Linux kernel driver Microsoft.Direct3D.Linux, which is included in the package in the latest version 1.606.4.

The graphics driver, which has also been updated, meets an error-corrected “XWayland” plugin for the Wayland open-source display server protocol.

Safe Mode is intended to save distributions

The concept of “safe mode” that Microsoft introduces with WSL 0.66.2 is intended to disable functions that are not required and to provide a recovery Show function for broken Linux distributions.

[wsl2] safeMode=true

Microsoft is once again shipping the latest version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux on x86 systems with 64-bit CPUs on Windows 10 and Windows 11 and on Arm64 platforms with Windows on Arm. The download is offered directly from the project page.

The Windows subsystem for Linux in the Microsoft Store

The WSL 0.66.2 can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Store of Windows 10 and Windows 11 and automatically install.

Subsystem for Android is expanded

The Windows subsystem for Android is being further expanded and will soon be usable in “other countries and regions” in addition to the USA.

Japan is now making the start and is receiving a preview of the Windows subsystem for Android and access to the Amazon Appstore.
