Nvidia is expanding its GeForce Now cloud gaming service with six more games and an optional higher quality for users who stream on the web version instead of the dedicated apps on the PC. However, the most expensive subscription is required.

2,560 × 1,440 pixels and 120 FPS for Chromium browser

GeForce Now is available as an app across a range of platforms – Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, Nvidia Shield, Android, Android TV and other smart TV operating systems. An alternative way to access the streaming service via browser is the web version – and on iOS devices, a progressive web app via Safari is the only way to use GeForce Now, as there is still no app within the app store there. There is now a higher quality not for Safari, but for the Chromium browsers Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. So far, the end of the road was reached on the web with 1,920 × 1,080 pixels at 60 FPS, but Nvidia is now expanding the options to up to 2,560 × 1,440 pixels at 120 FPS.

However, users must manually activate the higher resolution and refresh rate. This can be done in the settings in the Streaming Quality sub-item, where 2,560 × 1,440 pixels and 120 FPS must be selected separately. However, this requires a subscription to the RTX 3080 level (test). The most expensive tariff costs around 20 euros per month or is available six months in advance for around 100 euros. A maximum of 3,840 × 2,160 pixels is offered, but not via the web browser.

The web client is not the first to break the limitation of Full HD at 60 FPS. It wasn't until the end of June of this year that Nvidia upgraded the Android app to streaming with up to 120 FPS, but on mobile devices it remains at a maximum of 1,920 × 1,080 pixels. Furthermore, only Full HD with 60 FPS is also available to iOS users via Safari or, for example, Firefox users.

Six new games with GeForce Now support

Besides that, Nvidia announces the availability of six more games to the GeForce Now catalogue. This means that there are now over 1,300 titles in Nvidia's cloud gaming range, but customers still have to buy or own each game individually. The six new titles are:

  • Thymesia (New Release August 18th, Steam)
  • Century : Age of Ashes (Steam)
  • Clanfolk (Steam)
  • Coromon (Steam)
  • HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed (Steam)
  • Phoenix Point (Epic Games Store)
