If you have a game console and play games fanatically, you quickly get used to the respective game controller. When you get another controller pushed into your hands, it always takes some getting used to where what is and because of the different shape, each controller also fits differently in the hand. Fortunately, you can connect Xbox and PlayStation controllers to your iPhone for a few years now, but that is a bit inconvenient if you want to play on your iPhone itself. There are also all kinds of game controllers for the iPhone, where you often place the iPhone between two controller parts. This is also the case with the new Backbone One, but it has something extra: it looks and feels like a PlayStation 5 controller.

Backbone One PlayStation Edition for iPhone

The controller is a collaboration between Backbone and PlayStation itself and is therefore officially licensed. The materials, colors and finish used are inspired by the DualSense controller of the PlayStation 5. At first glance, the two controllers look very similar. With the Backbone One PlayStation Edition, you place the iPhone in the controller via the Lightning connection. The controller draws power from the iPhone, so no charging is required. The controller is primarily intended for use with the PlayStation Remote Play feature, which allows you to play PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games on your iPhone.

In addition to its own Remote Play app, the controller also works with other iOS games optimized for remote game controllers. You can also play Apple Arcade games with this controller. Are you an Xbox gamer? Even then you can use this controller, for example with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or the streaming function of the Xbox. The disadvantage is that you can only use it with an iPhone. All iPhone models with Lightning are suitable, although you must use an included adapter for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Despite the strong similarities with the PlayStation 5 controller, there are some differences. The D-pad is located on this iPhone controller in the bottom left, while it is always in the top left on a traditional PlayStation controller. The shape of the D-pad is also slightly different. Handy extras are the headphone jack, so you can listen to the audio from your games wired. The controller can be ordered from now on and costs €119.99. That is a lot more expensive than a regular PlayStation 5 controller.
