Fall Guys: Bug leads to accidental purchases in the in-game shop

After switching to a free-to-play business model, Fall Guys suffers from a curious bug. A number of bugs in the shop are causing players to purchase items unintentionally. The problem has been confirmed by the developers and a solution is being worked on. Until then, a reverse transaction of purchases is offered.

In the past few days, numerous reports of accidental purchases have accumulated on Reddit. Purchases without a prior confirmation prompt, hidden key combinations to purchase, or transactions in which a completely different item was delivered were reported. In many cases, the purchases only became apparent when the in-game currency was declining.

According to Reddit posts, the customer service of the developer studio initially reacted dismissively. The error is not known, purchases can only be made intentionally in the game and refunds are excluded, it said. Mediatonic quickly moved away from this attitude. In a statement to PC Gamer, a spokesperson called the response “unacceptable” and promised bug fixes.

Mediatonic has also officially announced this via Twitter. Accordingly, the developers are working on “improvements” to the “design” of the shop, but the existence of bugs is not admitted. This would be communicatively unfavorable because it potentially undermines trust in the microtransactions in the game and thereby reduces the chance of winning. Additionally, Mediatonic accepts refund requests for purchases made between June 21st and the completion of the store improvements. In addition, all players will receive a free skin for their in-game avatar.

Extremely successful start

For Epic Games, the transition has been successful despite such difficulties worth it. As with Rocket League, the game became exclusive to Epic after the developers bought it and switched to a free-to-play model, which has had a hugely successful start. After around two weeks, the developers already reported 50 million players. This gives Fall Guys the best chance of long-term success, as long as it doesn't scare away most of that base.
