Andreas Kleinert's biopic about the life of writer Thomas Brasch won the most trophies at the German Film Awards in Berlin. War also played a role for the Lolas.

The drama “Dear Thomas” was the big winner at the German Film Prize 2022: The film by director Andreas Kleinert received a total of nine Lolas at the award ceremony on Friday evening in Berlin, including a Lola in gold for the best feature film. The tragic comedy “Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush” received the silver award. The drama “Great Freedom” was honored with the bronze Lola.

Albrecht Schuch is happy about Lola as best actor in “Dear Thomas”

Thomas Brasch grew up in the GDR as the son of a high-ranking official, but later went to the West. He is played by Albrecht Schuch, who received an award for best male leading actor. For the 36-year-old, it is already his third Lola after “Systemsprenger” and “Berlin Alexanderplatz”. Jella Haase, who also plays in “Lieber Thomas”, received the Lola for the best female supporting role.

“Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush” by director Andreas Dresen secured a total of three Lolas. In addition to the Lola in silver in the category best feature film, leading actress Meltem Kaptan was honored for best female lead and Alexander Scheer for best male supporting role. Kaptan had already been honored with the Silver Bear for best female lead at this year's Berlinale.

Cameraman Jürgen Jürges received an honorary award for outstanding services to German film. The 81-year-old is a “master of light,” said the presidential duo of the German Film Academy, Alexandra Maria Lara and Florian Gallenberger.

“Master of light”: Jürgen Jürges

Jürges had decisively influenced German film for more than five decades “through his unsurpassed empathy for characters and stories and his unique feeling for moods and images”. Jürges worked with directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder (“Angst Eat Soul”), Michael Haneke (“Funny Games”) and Uli Edel (“Christiane F. – Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo”).

Best Children's Film was “The Path”. Annette Focks was happy about the Lola for the best film music for her work in the film “Wonderful”. The children's film “Die Schule der Magical Animals” by director Gregor Schnitzler. The film adaptation of the book series of the same name was seen by over 1.7 million viewers in German cinemas. 

Best Documentary: Escape from an arranged marriage

The film “The Other Side of the River” by Frank Müller, Guevara Namer and Antonia Kilian won the “Best Documentary” category. The film tells the story of 19-year-old Hala, who escapes from an arranged marriage by crossed the Euphrates. There she found a home with a Kurdish women's defense unit, which shortly afterwards liberated her hometown of Minbij from the Islamic State.

The German Film Prize, which has been awarded annually since 1951, is the most important award in the German film industry and, at around three million euros, also the most valuable German culture prize. The six nominated films in the Best Feature Film category alone each receive 250,000 euros, the winner another 250,000 euros. The best actors in all categories each receive 10,000 euros. Remembrance of the War

Around 1700 people were invited to the award ceremony in the Berlin Palais am Funkturm. During the evening, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine was recalled several times. “The war changes everything, even an evening like this,” said Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth. The film should still be celebrated. “We need the power of film” – not to distract, but “to counter the misery”.
