Moskvich & egrave; a name that may not say much to many people as it is a historic Soviet-era car brand that no longer exists today. Brand that started its activities back in 1929 producing Ford models, only to permanently discontinue them under the weight of debts.

Cars that obviously found widespread use on the roads of the former Soviet Union but which also arrived in other countries, including Italy. Browsing the web, we found an old page from 1981 from the Unit & agrave; in which the advertisement was reported; of Moskvich. How much did it cost? 3,660,000 lire, ex-dealer, excluding VAT. Car also available in station wagon version at 4,050,000 lire.

Like many car brands of the countries of the Communist bloc, several Moskvich models have for & ograve; also had to face various quality/reliability problems; over time. Yet, this name is; returned to the headlines a few days ago. Apparently, it seems that Russia has now decided to resurrect it.

Given the difficult and dramatic international context, this project certainly has a strong symbolic and political significance as it aims to revive a well-known name of Soviet industry.

GOODBYE OF RENAULT

The starting point for this initiative comes from Renault's farewell to its activities; in Russia. Just a few days ago & egrave; official confirmation has arrived that the French have sold 100% of their shares in Renault Russia to the City; of Moscow , as well as 67.69% of their stake in AVTOVAZ at NAMI (the Central Research and Development Institute on Cars and Engines).

In response, the mayor of Moscow stated that in order not to embarrass; thousands of workers who would be left without work, the former Renault Moscow factory will resume & agrave; to produce cars under the Moskvich brand . The partner will be; Kamaz which produces trucks in Russia. The mayor recalls how the plant has a long history as it started its activities; almost 100 years ago and that it also produced its own Moskvich-brand cars.

This car plant has a long and glorious history. Almost a hundred years ago, it began & ograve; with Ford automobile production. The legendary & quot; Moskvich & quot; models have been produced here for decades. Since 1998, the plant has collaborated with Renault and the Logan, Duster and Sandero models have rolled off its assembly lines. In 2022 we will not stop: we will open a new page in the history of Moskvich.

According to the mayor, we will try & agrave; to keep all existing plant employees working. Also, you will try; to get most of the car components from Russian companies.

EVEN ELECTRICAL

The intentions seem rather ambitious. According to the mayor, it seems that initially only traditional cars will be produced, that is; equipped with endothermic engines. In the future, they will go to also build electric cars . Which models, for & ograve ;, is not & egrave; given to know.

Resurrecting a brand & egrave; a complex job and above all very expensive economically speaking. There is to understand then if it really will be; It is possible to create a Russian supply chain to have the necessary components for the production of cars. A not insignificant detail given the current situation.
