We are in a historical moment in which it seems that most of the car manufacturers are quickly abandoning the A segment, that of city cars, in favor of the more high-end models; tall, larger in size and certainly more & ugrave; profitable. In this general stampede, Toyota's choice to continue investing in this segment, even launching a new model, certainly has an important significance. Let's talk about Aygo X (we read & quot; cross & quot;) che far & agrave; its debut in the dealerships right from the middle of the & agrave; of the month of April.

Talking about a restyling & egrave; in this case absolutely reductive; Aygo X & egrave; in fact much more; than a simple update , & egrave; a new project born on the same platform used for the older sisters Yaris and Yaris Cross and enriched with a technological equipment that & egrave; practically impossible to find on other cars of the same price range. I had the opportunity to get on board, grind a hundred km and get a first idea of what its strengths are. Sit back and I'll tell you everything.

DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT

The first news which I absolutely cannot omit & egrave; undoubtedly linked to the platform on which it is; the new Aygo X was built. It is the same TNGA-B used to make the older sisters Yaris and Yaris Cross , obviously duly modified in some parts to be able to further contain the dimensions. Dimensions that, however, grow, and not a little, compared to Aygo.

We are therefore talking about 3.70 meters in length , which are exactly 23 centimeters more & ugrave; of Aygo and 24 less than Yaris , one meter and 52 centimeters in height, or 6 centimeters more; both compared to Yaris and the previous Aygo, and finally one meter and 74 centimeters in width, or 12 centimeters more; compared to Aygo and 4 centimeters more; by Yaris. As a natural consequence of all this & ograve; & egrave; also increased the space inside the passenger compartment and, together with this, also the capacity; of the trunk which now reaches 231 liters. Specifically we are talking about 63 liters more; compared to the younger sister and about ten more; compared to Fiat Panda. The weight in running order, finally, is; slightly over 1000 kg in the versions with CVT automatic transmission.

It therefore remains a compact car but with a little more space; aboard, especially for those occupying the front seats. Despite a wheelbase increased by as much as 9 centimeters, in fact, those who sit in the rear seats still have a little sacrificed space available. A lot also depends, of course, on the position of the driver's seat but if we had to give a general rule we could say that above six feet in height you could start to have some problems, especially with your knees.

Unfortunately. the rear doors do not open to 90 degrees but they stop at a lower angle limiting the space and for the entrance. Access is thus required tight to the rear seats & egrave; then a factor to definitely take into consideration even if you need to place a child seat on the sofa. Small sofa which then maintains the possibility; to be shot down in 50/50 configuration.

DESIGN

New platform and new exterior design which, especially at the front, is now characterized by much more lines; close to those of the older sisters. Starting from the optical groups, Full LED in the top of the range set-up, which are very reminiscent of those of Yaris. Then there remains the double trapezoid design as a signature of the most important part; forward of the nose, the first incorporates the Toyota logo in the upper part, the second surrounds the grille and the round fog lights in the most area; lower bumper. Right in correspondence with the bumpers, the line drawn by the most plastic; dark stretches towards the front wheel arches, pi & ugrave; imposing compared to those of Aygo and highlighted to emphasize the crossover air that characterizes this update.

The side view takes up the concept just expressed, the half & agrave; front & egrave; very similar to that of a Yaris while from the passenger door to the tail we remain more & ugrave; close to Aygo. All this & ograve; topped with a rib that crosses the entire side diagonally to give greater momentum and dynamism; to the figure.

And to confirm what has been said so far, moving behind the car the characteristic features are precisely those of Aygo. Starting from the glass door, inherited from its sister pi & ugrave; small which in turn shared it with Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108. All three models came from the same factory as Kol & igrave; n in the Czech Republic; factory which now belongs to Toyota alone and will produce; just the new Aygo X together with Yaris. In addition to the tailgate, we cannot forget the optical groups developed vertically with the arrow design which remains practically unchanged compared to the past.

In all this, the 18-inch alloy wheels, in the Lounge version (and in the Limited version limited to the first 6 months of launch), which contribute to making it even more; refined a look that & egrave; already however, very close to that of many lower-end alternatives; high.

INTERNAL AND INFOTAIMENT Even moving inside the cockpit you can immediately notice the work done by Toyota in terms of renewal interior, especially as regards the dashboard and all the parts relating to the driver and passenger. A restyling that is already starting; from the inside of the doors, which exploit the sheet metal with which they are made as a decorative and color element. The insert that houses the storage pocket, the handle for opening and the controls of the front windows is; instead in rigid plastic, so & igrave; as much of the rest of the dashboard structure.

The fabric seats are quite ergonomic and offer a design with a built-in headrest which gives it a more & ugrave; sporty. All adjustments are done manually and between the two front seats we have a small plastic organizer with the provision for housing a water bottle.

As already anticipated much of the plastic & egrave; made of rigid plastic but despite this & ograve; in this first day of use I did not notice particular creaking or other noises that could indicate an imperfect assembly. The distinctive element of the dashboard design is certainly the large central oval that houses the display for controlling the infotaiment . In the Lounge set-up it is a 9-inch diagonal panel, which becomes 8 in the Trend version and 7 in the Active version.

Particular certainly to underline & egrave; the fact that regardless of the diagonal of the display, all the set-ups offer the possibility; to connect our smartphone and then activate the Android Auto and Apple Carplay functions.

The whole passenger compartment is; enriched by details in the same color as the bodywork, from the inserts of the door panels, to the frame of the central oval passing through the stitching of the seats that form an X pattern that recalls the name of the model.

Below the display we then have the controls for the air conditioner, automatic or manual depending on the set-up, and moving even a little more; at the bottom we find the cigarette lighter socket, the USB and the pad for wireless charging of the smartphone. Speaking of the top-of-the-range version, we also have the ignition button keyless.

Behind the wheel, which is 3-spoke and upholstered in leather, the on-board instrumentation is placed instead and is egrave; for half & agrave; analog and for half & agrave; digital. Specifically, the rev counter, odometer and fuel gauge are analogue while in the center we have a small color display that provides us with all the data necessary to keep fuel consumption and other vehicle parameters under control.

Finally, I will talk about the assisted driving because it is; always through the controls on the steering wheel & egrave; It is possible to manage all the functions related to the Toyota Sefety Sense 2.5, that is the assistance package that basically allows you to meet the parameters of level 2 autonomous driving . Adaptive cruise control (up to 30 km/h), lane control and maintenance, obstacle and road sign recognition are therefore standard on all trim levels . A plus certainly not to be underestimated.

TEST DRIVING AND CONSUMPTION

Lightness I have also found in the gear knob and clutch when I was able to test the version with manual gearbox for a few kilometers. The engagement of the gears is precise and the clutch detaches in a point that is not & egrave; neither too high nor too low, I would say just right, where you would expect to feel the traction grip.

The version with automatic transmission instead offers a continuously variable CVT gearbox that is; the perfect ally of this Aygo X when we move in an urban context . In this situation, shifting is simulated correctly and linear delivery helps to maintain excellent driving comfort. Outside the city streets or in any case when you ask for a little more; of gas here, however, the dragging effect, or scooter effect, returns overwhelmingly, which makes most European and especially Italian users turn up their noses a little.

To be rewarded then the set-up ; despite the 18-inch wheels, in fact, the frame and suspension do their job well, so much so that the roughness; of city streets they are well absorbed and even when we face a bump the car remains stable and does not run into annoying bounces.

Having said that under the hood of this Aygo X we find the same engine we had in Aygo, that is a 1.0, three-cylinder, 72hp and 93nMm of torque at 4,000 rpm. We are certainly not talking about a lightning bolt of war, this Aygo X is not; certainly the car to win a drag-race or to run on a limiter track, but let's say that in the context for which it is; nevertheless, it remains a fairly reactive car and is able to guarantee us a good starting point in situations in which this is; necessary. The engine & egrave; it has been further optimized in order to further improve the consumption/performance ratio.

And since I mentioned consumption, I will tell you about a second of the data I collected in this day of use. Luckily we drove along a mixed route which took us from the center of Barcelona to Sitges via the Collserol and Serra d & # 39; Ordal hills. This tour has therefore allowed us to test the performance and consumption in the city, on the motorway and in the ups and downs of the hilly roads, passing from the 4.5 lt/100km of the urban route to the 5.5 of the motorway up to 6 , 7 of the mountain roads . We are therefore apparently not very far from the 4.7 lt/100km declared by Toyota as an average in the mixed route. Obviously we will return to these data when we have the possibility; to try it for a few more days.

PRICES AND PROMOTIONS

So let's close by talking about prices and any promotions at launch. Aygo X & egrave; available with a single engine, that is the 1.0, three-cylinder, 72hp aspirated (also good for novice drivers) of which I told you before. This can for & ograve; be declined in three different versions, in addition to the Limited one which will be; only available at launch. The set-ups take the name of Active, the basic one, Trend, the intermediate one and Lounge the top one . All four can be configured with automatic or manual transmission, while only Trend, Lounge and Limited will also be offered in the AIR version, or with a canvas sunroof.

We therefore start from a list price of < strong>16,500 euros for the Active version with manual gearbox which become 18,000 for the Trend, 19,500 for the Lounge and 20,500 for the Limited. For the CVT automatic gearbox it is necessary to add 1,200 euros, while the AIR option adds another 1,000 EUR. Excluding the Limited set-up that will go running out, the extremes are the 16,500 euros of the Active manual and the 21,700 of the automatic Lounge with sunroof.

TOYOTA AYGO X CONFIGURATOR

There is no shortage for & ograve; the usual packages of promotions for the launch that provide a discount of 3,000 on the list price in the face of trade-in or scrapping . To these are added an additional 500 euros if you decide to take advantage of the financing Toyota Easy (only until April 15) and, in the event of scrapping, 2,000 incentives state that should start again shortly. In the event that you re-enter all these promotions, the sum of the bonuses leads to an attack price of 11,000 euros for the Active version and 12,500 for the Trend version.

Speaking of financing then , with an advance of 1,800 euros and a Tan of 4.99% you get an installment of 109 euros for the Active set-up, 129 for the Trend and 149 euros for the Lounge (again for a total of 36 months). The guaranteed future value will be; therefore 6,050 euros for Active, 6,875 for Trend and 7,700 euros for Lounge.

And we end with the offer for the long-term rental which provides for a 48-month contract with a limit of 10,000 km per year for the Active set-up and 15,000 for that trend. In this case with an advance (VAT excluded) of 1,900 euros it will be; it is possible to drive Aygo X with a fee (excluding VAT) of 219 euros for Active and 249 euros for Trend.
