Update February 18, 2022: As we wrote in 2018, KPN will stop using the 3G network this year. Today, the provider will announce the exact date: as of March 31, 2022, KPN's 3G network will permanently stop, so that you can only connect to 2G, 4G and 5G connections.
The reason KPN is discontinuing the 3G network is to improve the quality of the 4G and 5G network. KPN says it will use the network capacity that will be released by stopping 3G for the 4G and 5G network. The provider promises that customers will benefit from more capacity and faster speeds.
If you are in a region where there is no 4G or 5G coverage, this means that you will fall back on the 2G connection as of March 31, 2022. In addition, the internet connection is slower and phone calls sound less good. The 2G network will remain available until at least April 2025.
Vodafone already stopped the 3G network in 2020, while T-Mobile stopped the 2G network last year.

KPN will stop 3G in 2022
Current iPhones can all connect to at least 4G, but that is not possible for older devices. iPhone users who still have an older model in 2022 will therefore have to take a step back from that moment if they are with KPN. Today, KPN announced that they will pull the plug from the 3G network in January 2022. However, this won't be a problem for most people.

According to KPN, 95% of KPN customers are now on the 4G network and, according to the provider, this will only increase in the coming period. New devices are standard equipped with 4G and the bundles with KPN also provide 4G speeds. The discontinuation may also be good news for people who still have poor 4G coverage at KPN. KPN will use the released 3G capacity to further improve the 4G network. In all other cases, you will fall back on the slower 2G network from 2022.
According to measurements, KPN's network currently covers approximately 96% of the inhabitants. Especially in the east and southeast there are still some areas where the coverage can be slightly less. In addition, there are also areas where KPN offers 4G+. Moreover, KPN is already testing the 5G networks in several Dutch cities. However, it will probably take until 2022 before the 5G network can be set up, because the intended frequency is still in use.
Vodafone also stops with 3G
Vodafone stops in 2020 with 3G, the company announced at the end of last year. If you are a KPN member, you need at least an iPhone 5s to be able to use the 4G internet everywhere. In some areas you can also do that with the iPhone 5, because they use a different frequency there. However, VoLTE, or calling via 4G, requires at least an iPhone 6. If you call via the 4G network, you can continue to use the internet at the same speed at the same time. This is not possible with a device older than the iPhone 6.
