Mercedes passer & agrave; to use batteries more & ugrave; economic but with less capacity within the future range of & quot; entry-level & quot; models. The reason? Contain the costs of batteries due to the increase in the prices of some raw materials. The carmaker, in detail, aims to introduce type LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) batteries for the next generation of cars such as the EQA and EQB that will arrive from 2024 to 2025. This interesting news comes directly from the CEO of the brand Ola Kallenius in an interview.

REDUCE COSTS

The German manufacturer is not & egrave; certainly the first to want to adopt these accumulators which are much more; economic and therefore allow to contain the costs of electric cars. On the other hand, however, these batteries have a density; lower energy (therefore less autonomy) and suffer more from low temperatures. For the CEO of Mercedes, consumers will agree to have lower autonomy for the “entry level” models, given that the costs of materials to make the batteries more & ugrave; performance cars, such as those in the EQS, are on the rise.

After all, as Kallenius points out, not all customers need ultra-high-performance cars. For this, the German brand is thinking about LFP batteries for some of its models. Among the suppliers of these accumulators there will be & agrave; certainly also CATL which already has; has agreements with Mercedes for EQS batteries.

Most of the automotive industry uses nickel and cobalt in lithium-ion batteries to improve the performance of electric. However, supplies of both of these materials are limited and prices are rising . Tesla has also decided to use LFP accumulators on all Standard Range models produced globally and not only more; on those made inside the Chinese Gigafactory.

Mercedes is investing more; of 40 billion euros in electrification of its product range in this decade. Its plans include building battery-powered cars on three new platforms from 2025 and setting up eight battery factories around the world in collaboration with its partners. Thanks to several agreements signed in recent times, Kallenius is & egrave; confident that Mercedes will have; enough batteries to power its new range of electric cars.
