It has recently been quiet around AMD Threadripper, a new sign of life is coming just right. Chagall therefore exists, at least as a variant Threadripper PRO 5975WX for workstations. At the same time, the rumor mill agrees on the swan song of a normal model.
In the HEDT segment, AMD has no pressure to act. Threadripper is the sole entertainer there, a competitor, if at all, far from in sight. In view of the tight supply situation, the company seems to set its priorities differently, which is why a normal thread ripper – the last generation started in November 2019 – has been pushed back steadily and may now even be deleted from the list. A pro model for the workstation market is to come anyway, but basically these are de facto Epyc processors only with a different name.

Based on Zen 3, the Threadripper Pro 5000 behaves as expected. The model, which clocks at 3.6 GHz, can turbo up to 4.5 GHz and, in single-core tests, strikes a fairly similar tone as an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X. Zen 3 is Zen 3. In the multi-core area, thanks to 32 cores, things are happening. In terms of percentage, it also gains around 20 percent compared to the predecessor Threadripper 3970X – the architecture upgrade from Zen 2 to Zen 3 is once again visible.
When the workstation solutions, which, contrary to the HEDT variants, rely on eight memory channels and many PCIe lanes, will come onto the market, remains the big question in the end. Threadripper Pro 3000 came onto the market with a long delay, but on the other hand, Ryzen 5000 with Zen 3 has now been around for over a year, even Milan with the same architecture in the server has been around for six months. In the end, it will really be more of a decision on the chips and priorities available. And as long as all of this is scarce, the segments that are least needed are the first to be dropped or put on the back burner. Since the socket and the infrastructure remain completely identical to the previous versions, AMD could presumably take countermeasures here if necessary.
