Domestic. A new opinion poll shows that the differences between the sexes are large in the view of stricter rules for plastic use.

The survey, which was conducted by the SOM Institute, asked those who took a stand on 18 proposals on how plastic can be regulated. The results show that all proposals, no matter how far-reaching, have public support.

“Softer” proposals – such as standardized information on packaging, that new products can be recycled, and government subsidies for more environmentally friendly material production – received more support.

More mandatory measures, such as a tax on disposable products, a ban on fossil-based plastics in 2030, and that shops that sell plastic products will also offer repairs, are supported by fewer.

The controversial tax on plastic carrier bags is supported by a total of 61 percent of women and 41 percent of men. Of the women, 41 per cent state that they are “very positive” about the tax, compared with 21 per cent of the men.

In general, the survey shows large, significant differences between groups. Women are much more positive about far-reaching measures than men. Left-wing and right-wing voters also differ – left-wing voters support a tougher plastic policy to a greater degree than those on the right.
