Shortly after the arrival of the iPad mini 2021, there were complaints about “jelly scrolling”, an issue where one side of the screen scrolls a fraction slower than the other. Apple was quick to declare that this is normal behavior with LCD screens, so there was no manufacturing defect. But with the new screen problem in the iPad mini 2021, that may well be the case. A Reddit user reports that his 2021 iPad mini display suffers from discoloration and distortion when pressed a little harder.

The problem is mainly visible if you grab the iPad mini in portrait orientation and press a little more firmly on the screen in the top right corner, ie below the power button. But the discoloration does not appear directly where you press, but always in exactly the same place. A teardown shows that this is the approximate corner of the battery. There are also two other places at the top where the distortion appears, also at connectors inside.

The affected user decided to exchange his iPad mini at an Apple Store for a replacement, but that model was also found to suffer from this problem. In fact, the effect was much worse there. Other users in the discussion have also experienced this screen problem, although not everyone is affected by it. You notice it especially if you have activated the dark mode, according to experiences. Pressing the display more firmly is mainly used if you want to drag a part or hold it down to get extra options. Another user reports the same discoloration just above the USB connector.

The Apple Store employee is said to have told the affected user that it wouldn't surprise him if Apple launched a recall, but we would don't take it into account too much. Apple is often reluctant to take such actions and only takes these steps if a higher number of complaints come in.
