Update October 3, 2021: Apple has discontinued this repair program. It concerned a small number of devices that had been sold with a broken logic board. The affected devices often crashed or could no longer be turned on. The issue started right after the launch, so you had time to report since September 2018.

As of last Saturday, the repair program has been officially stopped and the listing has been removed from the website. You can still contact Apple in case of complaints, but you can no longer rely on the repair program. For European users, the impact is small, as these are iPhone 8 models sold in specific countries between September 2017 and March 2018.

Below is our original article from September 1, 2018.

The chance that you, as a Dutch or Belgian, will end up with a defective logic board is not that great. You should then have purchased your device between September 2017 and March 2018 in Australia, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), India, Japan, New Zealand and the US. Via a search tool on the website you can enter your serial number and see if you qualify. According to Apple, it only concerns the iPhone 8 and not the iPhone 8 Plus. iPhones with a faulty logic board can freeze, suddenly restart or can no longer be switched on.

If your iPhone is eligible, then that is no reason to celebrate. You will lose your device for a few days because it has to be sent to an external repair center. You must make an appointment with the Apple Store or an authorized service provider for this. You can also choose to send your device, but in all cases you will lose your device for a while.

Don't be in a hurry, because the repair program is valid for three years after the first models went on sale in September 2017.

Before you send it in, of course make an iPhone backup on iCloud or in iTunes.
