Apple always supplies the new iPhone with the latest version of the operating system as standard. In the case of the iPhone 13 series, that is iOS 15. But one iOS 15 is not the other, as it turns out. The iPhone 13 models that Apple ships starting today have a different version of iOS 15 installed than the one that came out on September 20 for everyone. We therefore recommend installing a software update immediately after transferring your iPhone data. Even if you start your iPhone completely fresh without a backup, you still have to install a software update.

iPhone 13 immediately gets an update for iOS 15

Apple appears to be a total of having released three versions of iOS 15.0. Each version has a different build number. The version that comes preinstalled on the iPhone 13 series has an older build number than the iOS 15 update that released to everyone on September 20. These are the build numbers in circulation:

  • 19A344: iOS 15 Release Candidate of September 14th
  • 19A345: iOS 15, installed by default on iPhone 13 series
  • 19A346: iOS 15, public release of September 20th

Since the version on the iPhone 13 series (19A345) is older, we recommend updating to the latest version (19A346) immediately. You can do this by going through the Settings app to General > Software update. The latest version will appear automatically, after which you can download and install it like any update.

Except for the iPhone 13 series, this also applies to the iPad mini 2021 and the iPad 2021. These are also provided as standard of the older build of iPadOS 15 and is recommended to update as soon as possible.

Would you like to know which version you have? Then go to Settings > General > Info and tap 15.0 behind Software version. There you will see the current build number in brackets.
