It is in an embassy report from Robert Silverman, the then US Chargé d´Affaires for the embassy in Stockholm, that Sweden's intentions are described.

According to the document, the humanitarian superpower has in part had other motives for their participation in the war in Afghanistan than those that have seen the light of day in the Swedish media.

“JAS Gripen fighter plane. The Swedish Armed Forces has openly proposed that JAS Gripen be sent to Afghanistan. The Swedish military has lobbied to put the plane there and said that the combat experience can benefit the air force – and contribute to the marketing of the Gripen “, he writes in the report.

The official reason for Sweden's participation has, however, been to run girls' schools and invest in “human rights” in Afghanistan.
