LG, in cooperation with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe's largest laboratory for applied research, demonstrated a terahertz connection at a distance of 100 meters outdoors on July 13th. The 6G mobile communications standard is to be standardized worldwide from 2025 and then commercialized.

Within the next four years, “6G networks should be able to offer faster wireless transmission and support communication speeds with low latency and high reliability ”. In Germany, 6G is expected from 2030. The federal government is currently funding 6G with a total of 700 million euros.

LG classifies the successful demonstration of a terahertz connection over a distance of exactly 100 meters as the crow flies as a “milestone”. The data was transferred between the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) and the Technical University of Berlin.

The breakthrough that we made with this test shows that we will always be successful in using the terahertz radio spectrum in the coming 6G era get closer.

Due to the short range of terahertz connections over 6G and the heavy loss of power during transmission between the two antennas and during reception, “one of the greatest challenges is the need for power amplification in order to generate a stable signal over ultra-wideband frequencies”, so LG.

The power amplifier developed by LG, Fraunhofer HHI and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) was decisive for the success of this latest test.

The power amplifier used was able to achieve a stable signal power of up to 15 dBm in frequency ranges between 155 and 175 GHz and thus enable transmission in the terahertz range. Samsung and the University of California have already demonstrated 6G in the terahertz range in the laboratory.

In addition, LG was also able to use adaptive beamforming to determine the position of sources demonstrate in wave fields. LG has summarized further information in an official press release.
