Give renders to reality, the German company Lilium is serious and announces that it has closed a historic agreement with the Brazilian airline Azul, object of the partnership as many as 220 eVTOLs (Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing) which would constitute the first network of & quot; flying taxis & quot; in the world. The startup has begun to talk about s & eacute; already in 2015 with the first loans and a 5-seater aircraft which then, over time, became; evolved to reach the current form which includes 6 passengers and 1 pilot.

The agreement has made investors who have believed in the project jump on their seats, in fact it is a contract worth about 1 billion dollars that could project Lilium towards the top of a still practically unexplored sector. We are in fact talking about completely electric vehicles and capable of taking off and landing vertically , guaranteeing an autonomy of about 250 km and speed; maximum of 280 km/h.

A new generation of aircraft capable, potentially, of retiring dear old helicopters. It is no coincidence that the agreement is was closed with a company in Brazil, where helicopter transport is widespread and many are produced (it seems to be the second country in the world). The lack of infrastructures, the dangerousness; roads and the crime rate make this South American country the ideal place for such an evolution, so much so that the founder of the airline Azul, David Neeleman, is betting on possible evolutions:

Having a plane like Lilium's, at a fraction of the cost of a helicopter, with much more; security, we think we can expand this market. We think that the market can be 10 or 20 or 30 times more; great today, or even more & ugrave; – said Neeleman.

Here's what it will look like? a future Azul heliport

The goal is starting with the first flights in 2025. The cost of each individual aircraft is around $ 4 million, plus; An additional $ 1 million each year for & quot; after-sales & quot; support. We do not know if the latter includes the change of the batteries – made by the German Customcells – which Lilium estimates necessary every 4 months, with a jet life cycle that will not go away; over 8 years.

There are no further indications at the moment, we do not know for example how much it will be; cost a future transport on one of the Lilium vehicles available to Azul, with which it estimates up to 25 flights per day (from almost 100 km on average) and 10 hours of operation. One wonders how fast these battery packs will be in recharging.

These and other questions will certainly have to be answered soon, Lilium is in fact planning the debut on the American list of Nasdaq and the real competitors are few; the German company estimates that the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) sector will touch & agrave; a value of 1.5 – 3 trillion dollars in 2040.
