It was late on the evening of May 30 that police were alerted to a residential building in Idaho Springs, Colorado. A woman in the house accused her 75-year-old neighbor Michael Clark of knocking on the wall. She also claimed that he had beaten her.

The police therefore knocked on Clark's door, but without informing that they were police. When the door opened, Clark had armed himself with an ax, which he, after being physically attacked by police officer Nicholas Hanning, immediately put down again when he realized that it was the police standing outside the door.

Clark then did no resistance but stood calmly and talked to the police and tried to give his version of what happened. Nicholas Hanning, however, was not interested in listening to it, but shot him instead with his electric pistol. The 75-year-old fell headlong backwards, hit him in the back of the head and fainted. He has since been treated in hospital with life-threatening injuries and it is unclear if he will survive.

Since videos from the police's body cameras have been published, police officer Nicholas Hanning has been fired and is now at risk of prosecution. Idaho Springs Police Chief Nathan Buseck calls the police's actions “unacceptable.” beginning from previous experiences and probably thought they were right when they brutally attacked a person in their own home, he says.
