Europe car market 2021: hybrid, electric and plug-in continue to grow

In the second quarter of 2021 , registrations of hybrid, plug-in and electric continue to grow in European Union. ACEA, in fact, wanted to take a photograph of the period highlighting the excellent sales trend of these types of cars. ELECTRIC, HYBRID AND PLUG-IN WELL

Pi & ugrave; specifically, the market share of BEV models in Q2 of 2021 & egrave; were equal to 7.5% (210,298 cars), a clear leap forward compared to 3.5% in the same period of 2020 (when Europe was struggling with the effects of the lockdown). Better result even than that of Q1 of 2021. The market share of BEVs in the first three months of the year was 5.7%. To contribute to this growth in Q2 of 2021 (+ 231.6%) above all the excellent performance of all 4 main markets of the European Union and, in particular, those of Germany and Spain.


Regarding PHEV models , the market share reached 8.4% (235,730 units). Here too there is was a clear growth compared to the same period of 2020 (+ 255.8%) when Plug-ins represented 3.7% of new registrations. Slight growth even compared to Q1 of 2021 when the share was 8.2%. Italy is was the market in which & egrave; was recorded the most & ugrave; strong increase in sales of PHEVs with 21,647 cars (growth of 659.3% on an annual basis).

The excellent performance of HEV hybrids continues in the second quarter of 2021 obtained 541,162 registrations (+ 213.5%), equal to a market share of 19.3%. In Q2 2020 they owned a 9.6% stake. Growth was also recorded compared to Q1 of 2021 (18.4%).


From April to June 2021, registrations of petrol and diesel engines have grown across the European Union by 25.3% and 7.8% compared to the same period in 2020 (when the effects of the outbreak of the pandemic were discounted). This growth & egrave; however, it was considerably more; contained compared to that of the other segments, resulting in a reduction in market shares.

Petrol cars, in the second quarter of 2021, can count on a share of 41.8%, down compared to the 42.2% in Q1 of 2021 and 51.9% in Q2 of 2020. Diesel cars are also down: 20.4% compared to 23.2% in the first quarter of the year and 29.4% in the second quarter of 2020.

The demand for CNG vehicles in the European Union is; increased by 41.8% to 13,497 units & agrave; in the second quarter, supported mainly by significant growth in Italy (+ 94.0%), which alone accounts for 75% of all EU sales in this segment. The registrations of LPG-powered cars are more & ugrave; which doubled (+ 134.1%) for a total of 59,363 units, supported by Italy (+ 89.5%) and France (+ 266.0%), the two largest European markets for LPG cars.
