Hyundai IONIQ 5: all you need to know … and something more?

Hyundai IONIQ 5 is not; any electric car and in some ways it can be called a small, great revolution. The key to everything is; 800 volt technology, a technicality that translates into speed; Charging: 18 minutes to bring the battery from 10 to 80% means you can get a range of about 320 kilometers in less than 20 minutes with a high-power charging station like Ionity.

Powers like this high are not new: the platform used by Porsche and Audi (on RS e-tron GT, here the first test) is; already capable of running at 800 volts and Tesla is rolling out the 250 kW charging stations introduced long ago. With IONIQ 5, however, this technology is made accessible to a greater number of buyers than the German prices, and the competition between Koreans and Americans is becoming more and more; serrata.

Let's go for & ograve; with order to find out how it goes, characteristics, real consumption, interiors and prices of the new IONIQ, a term that will indicate & agrave; from now on the range of electric Hyundai where the IONIQ 5 will also be followed by the IONIQ 6 (sedan) and the IONIQ 7 (SUV).

DIMENSIONS AND TRUNK

The 19 & quot; and 20 & quot; they are well sized in relation to the general proportions of the car, not quite compact since it is a crossover with 16 cm of ground clearance and a length of 4.63 meters. The very short overhangs testify to the attention to the interiors, where the 3-meter step will become; fundamental in interpreting the comfort for those who sit behind.

Excellent trunk that starts from 527 liters : not the best in the segment. Model Y claims 580 liters (but is longer) and Enyaq iV is the best with its 585 liters.

INTERNAL AND INTERIOR: A LIVING ROOM ON WHEELS

IONIQ 5 & egrave; perhaps the car that today best interprets that trend of concepts, seen at fairs and auto shows, which seek to transform the passenger compartment into a living room. An example? The latest anticipation of Mini's style.

While remaining classic in its arrangement, in fact, IONIQ 5 creates that lounge effect with the seats: in front you have two armchairs with integrated and removable footrests as if they were the armchair at home, reclining to become a bed, with the central console that can be adjusted (140 mm) and a dashboard that risks becoming a table.

touchscreenRECHARGE: FAST AND TWO-WAY

Marketing will speak & agrave; ultra-fast charging, 100 kilometers in 5 minutes (from WLTP cycle), of jokes and jokes. But what does it mean to have an 800V platform? It means that the IONIQ technique is; sophisticated, dual and has its roots in the most advanced electrical engineering; pure.

Reducing to a minimum, E-GMP works at 800 V but it supports the classic 400 V infrastructure to be compatible with any existing column. To be able to charge anywhere, it uses the onboard inverter which actually acts on the voltage as the school teaches, transforming the 400 V into the 800 V of the power electronics without resorting to additional components (as it happens on the platform Porsche).

The IONITY network aims to expand to 400 HPC stations for charging up to 350 kW in Europe by 2022. 45 new stations are already in place. under construction and all the energy supplied is CO2-neutral because & eacute; from renewable sources.

The addition of an ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit) to the charging system then enables bi-directional flow and offers 3.6 kW of external power: remember the power committed at home?

Fundamental aspect will be & agrave; that of the real tests at the columns to understand, with the HPC, how it will behave & agrave; the charging curve. In theory, raising the voltage allows you to obtain a smoother curve; stable and sweet as well as & eacute; reduce the Joule effect (overheating) and thus better manage the thermal of the battery. Simplifying, you get a more battery. & quot; fresh & quot; and less & quot; stressed & quot; during the charge, therefore able to withstand more; long high powers.

A TRIPUDIUM OF ADAS

SmartSense & egrave; the name that Hyundai uses to summarize the suite which includes a quantity & agrave; huge of ADAS . List them all would force you to create a paragraph where the English terms would exceed those in Italian, just think that the first is called Highway Driving Assist 2 with Lane Changig Assist.

In summary? It has the best of a full Level 2 : manages steering, accelerator and brake on the motorway by keeping to the center of the lane, facilitates lane change, sensors warn you about anything happening in front, behind and to the sides of the car, with automatic stop functions at intersections, in in the event of a frontal collision with pedestrians, cyclists and cars or in the event of a collision when reversing or at the exit of a parking lot.

360 degree cameras for millimeter maneuvers, automatic parking and parking even remotely without the driver being behind the wheel (Tesla type but controllable from the remote control). Seven airbags, including the front central one for the driver.

ROAD TEST

IONIQ 5 should be evaluated under three main aspects: as an electric car, as a car in general and as a means to live everyday life

How it goes. .. as an electric car

In the world of electric, Hyundai's crossover promises very well from this first road test, waiting for a more review; deepened as soon as there is & agrave; way of putting it to the whisk for more & ugrave; time and also to the charging stations.

In the city & agrave; and extra-urban, immediately convinces the energy recovery system with the paddles on the steering wheel that add a playful element to driving: the left one, if pressed, takes us to braking with a feeling similar to driving a pedal, a middle way between the Leaf/Tesla philosophy and that of other battery-powered vehicles.

With the engine pi & ugrave; powerful, then, IONIQ 5 & egrave; among the best of the mid-range: pi & ugrave; of 300 hp available means having true electric acceleration, enough to amaze most drivers not accustomed to super sports. Combining immediately available torque and all-wheel drive, you have a confident, bright, smile-on-your-face and very satisfying drive. It does not reach the excesses of Tesla and the combustion cars that want to challenge Model 3 and Model Y, but on the street you will never feel the need to have more, indeed ….

What about travel comfort?

In the previous paragraphs we have seen the spaces on board, between the passenger compartment and the trunk, and the technology. These brochure features go for & ograve; then combined with the use that you can & agrave; make of car. Having the sockets, one internal and one external at 3.6 kW, means living the car with much more; versatility in a world where the technological devices to be powered have multiplied compared to a few decades ago.

Raise your hand if you installed an inverter many years ago on his car to connect the computer, to power an Xbox taken by the sacred fire of tuning or for a thousand other needs? Today the inverters are already; installed on the electric, yet there are few cars that make them usable to attach something that delivers more; of the miserable 12 V: IONIQ does it, the Japanese do it on the small Honda-e, Ford does it on the & quot; beast & quot; Plug-In hybrid and a few others. Do not do sacred monsters like the Americans of Tesla or the Germans with their MEB platform daughter of stratospheric investments.

The title & quot; travel comfort & quot; it must therefore be remodeled with practicality; of use and the comfort of having a versatile car. It & egrave; in the seats: two reclining armchairs for a nap or to look at the stars may seem excessive and perhaps too much of a marketing product, for & ograve; the rear reclining sofa with independent depth adjustment; & egrave; something that is appreciated in real life, that made up of families with children, groups of friends, travel. The same goes for the front console: you push it back and pass the other way without stunts that inevitably end up throwing awkward kicks on the infotainment screen or other parts of the cockpit.

< p> IONIQ 5 does not invent anything, but wisely combines several features already; views in the automotive world, combining them into a spacious and versatile crossover.

How to drive

Let's close with the last part of the analysis, the driving dynamics. Hyundai favors comfort, for this reason the most powerful engine; fits & egrave; perhaps the 160 kW rear-wheel drive and single engine with the 72.6 kWh battery. Consumption presumably lower than the 225 kW model tested but correct sizing.

IONIQ 5 Long Range all-wheel drive, actually, is not; an evil car, simply has the defect of making the palates notice more; ends like those 300 HP are not accompanied by a sporty setup: it will probably be; IONIQ 6, the sedan, to square the circle of this engine.

SUV tradeoffs (crossover actually, 16cm ground clearance as ID.4, less than EQA and Q4 e-tron) are felt in a steering that lacks the sharpness of other competitors and in a setup which favors comfort and & egrave; more soft. All this & ograve; it is noticeable only at the limits, when you force your hand (and foot) and deal with a beast for more; of 2 tons in extreme situations. Other beasts do better, Q4 e-tron & egrave; perhaps one of the best compromises in the SUV world, even without calling electric sedans of similar segments into play.

REAL CONSUMPTION AND AUTONOMY

By combining the data of fast charging with those of real consumption, two important pieces of information are obtained. The first is; that effective autonomy is between 330 and 430 km with a full tank of battery power more & ugrave; capacious, that of 72.6 kWh combined with the engine pi & ugrave; powerful.

The second is; that in 15 minutes at an Ionity they recharge even more; of 200 kilometers and this means, trying to hypothesize a very long journey in which the goal is; get home as soon as possible, lose a quarter of an hour every 200/250 kilometers (depending on driving speed) to minimize time. Obviously this scenario is; valid only if the distance is; greater than the autonomy of the car, otherwise zero or one charge may be enough to get to your destination.

PRICE

Hyundai IONIQ 5 & egrave; available in Italy from € 44,750, a list figure that drops to the attractive price of € 34,310; with incentives if you are satisfied with 58 kWh, a capacity; that & egrave; slightly less than the 64 kWh Kona EV which had shown good autonomy … even if more; light.

For an all-round car you need 72.6 kWh but it is not; all-wheel drive required: intermediate set-up, right power, right battery: 41.510 & euro; with incentives and really risks competing at home with plug-in hybrid colleagues.

With the purchase you will have; right to one year of subscription to IONITY using Charge myHyundai and registering by March 31, 2022 to activate the 12 months included: the subscription is; free, you will pay for top-ups anyway but at a controlled price.

THE ALTERNATIVES

Taking into consideration a decently equipped version and with the 72.6 kWh battery, the one to travel and make the IONIQ 5 a unique car for the family and for all needs, the first famous opponent and alternative is; definitely Tesla with Model 3 and Model Y: different bodies but comparable prices. IONIQ has two advantages in Italy over Model Y (barring price changes when the American SUV arrives): & egrave; available and the price of the top-of-the-range Evolution AWD allows access to incentives. Looking at the house, the Koreans see in the cousin Kia EV6 a possible rival, also encouraged if the GT version is excluded.

Choosing the 58 kWh version, with a starting price, from the list, of less than 45,000 & euro ;, IONIQ 5 you can & ograve; clash with the German VAGs: Audi Q4 e-tron, Skoda Enyaq iV and Volkswagen ID.4.
