Silverstone Alta F1: “Chimney effect” housing puts more fans in the lid

In the third generation, cases with a “chimney effect” layout from Silverstone accommodate more fans under the cover. For this purpose, two levels for components are created in the new Alta F1. The simple and subtle design of the midi tower is reminiscent of representatives of the Fortress series.

Silverstone speaks of a “chimney effect” because of the layout that is rotated by 90 degrees, which enables a completely vertical air flow. Fresh air is sucked in by the three 140 mm fans supplied on the floor and released upwards out of the case after it has been led past the graphics card and CPU cooler. However, it has not been proven that this concept cools significantly better than a horizontal air flow; Natural convection does not play a role in actively ventilated housings due to the guided air flow.

More fans in the cover

The second compartment is new to the layout, which has been reissued over and over again for years. While the components are located in the large, lower area – with the connections pointing upwards – there is space above for three additional fans that can suck air out of the case. A 360 mm radiator also fits on the base and cover.

The power pack moves to the rear and from there sucks in fresh air through a dust filter. Exhaust air is released upwards into the housing. Under the power supply there is an HDD cage for two 2.5 “and 3.5” HDDs each, two further 2.5 “HDDs fit behind the mainboard. If the cage is removed, the power supply can be longer than 160 millimeters. Coolers and graphics cards are not subject to any relevant restrictions.

Further models are obvious

For the Alta F1, which is available in black or silver, Silverstone charges around 240 euros. At this price, the housing can already be obtained from stock in specialist shops. Nevertheless, the chances are good that the concept will also be available cheaper. Experience has shown that Silverstone offers chassis in several lines, which are veiled in different noble ways. In the past, a version with an aluminum outer shell like the Alta F1 was always followed by a simpler plastic version, which was sold considerably cheaper.
