Multiscope regularly conducts surveys about smart home and related products. Last year, the research firm concluded that 42% of households in 2020 will be a smart home, which corresponds to 3.3 million households. The new research has re-examined the current status of smart home in the Netherlands and concludes that 50% of households have one or more smart home products. That is equivalent to 4 million households. The survey was conducted among more than 5,200 Dutch people in the Smart Home Monitor.

Research smart home in the Netherlands in 2021

In total, Dutch households represent €2.9 billion worth of smart home products, which is an increase of €400 million compared to last year (+18%). In 2018, 36% of households still had one or more smart home products in their home. The main reasons for choosing a smart home are convenience and comfort and cost savings. According to the research, one reason not to opt for smart home products (yet) is that current devices are still sufficient or that the added value of a smart product is not seen.

‘Smart lighting most popular and most grown’

Of all the categories that Multiscope has researched, lighting & switches at the top. 27% of those surveyed say they have a product in this category at home. Last year it was 21%, a growth of 28.6%. In second place are smart speakers, which can be found in 23% of households. That was 19% last year (a growth of 21%), making the energy & heating has fallen to third place.

Over the past year, Multiscope has conducted several studies in this area. For example, research showed which were the most popular smart speakers in 2020. Despite the rise in this category, users prefer to control their smart home with a telephone rather than a speaker via speech.

The new research does not show which are the most popular brands or models and which home automation system is most commonly used. For Apple users, there will be a lot of improvements for HomeKit in iOS 15 this year. The new platform Matter, which is a collaboration between Apple, Google, Zigbee, Amazon and other brands, will also boost the availability and collaboration between new products.
