It is not; a mystery that Volvo has ambitious plans in the electric car sector. As we know, the carmaker aims to become only electric by 2030. To be able to support this strategy, however, an adequate supply of accumulators is needed. This is why & eacute; Volvo, like other brands, is investing in new projects in this area. The last one concerns the will to create a new joint venture with Northvolt through which cells will be developed and produced that will serve both Volvo and Polestar models.

NEW GIGAFACTORY IN EUROPE 
The joint venture will be & agrave; held 50% by both companies. Initially, it will be; created a research and development center in Sweden which is expected to become operational in the course of 2022. The goal of this facility will be; to develop next generation cells and vehicle integration technologies specifically designed for the new Volvo and Polestar models. The joint venture will go then to create a new Gigafactory in Europe which will have; a capacity production up to 50 GWh per year and whose activities they should start in 2026.
In addition to all this, the agreement calls for Volvo to purchase 15 GWh of battery cells from the current Northvolt Ett plant in Skelleftea, Sweden, from 2024. This collaboration between the two companies & agrave; assure & agrave; the European need for battery cells which & egrave; underpinning Volvo's ambitious electrification plans. In fact, it is recalled that the car manufacturer will work; to make sure that already by 2025, 50% of its sales will be related to electric-only models.
Thanks to the possibility; to be able to build the cells near the production plants in Europe and the fact that the new factory will be; powered by clean energy, Volvo will be able to reduce the environmental footprint attributable to the supply and production of batteries for cars of future production.
