Apple lets you personalize your iCloud mail with your own domain

One of the new features for iCloud is iCloud+, the new form of the paid iCloud subscription. Anyone who pays for iCloud storage gets the iCloud+ features right away. An interesting new feature within iCloud+ is choosing your own domain for your email address. We have seen such functions for some time with many business mail services.

Your own iCloud domain within iCloud+

Anyone with an Apple ID can create their own email address with the domain @icloud.com. Years ago, this was the successor to Apple's former cloud services such as MobileMe. But with all those services, it's immediately clear that your email address comes from Apple. With your own domain name in iOS 15, the part behind the at sign, you can make your email address more personal. We have seen such functions for years in, for example, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Apple didn't say anything about it during the presentation, but the new feature can be found in Apple's overview of iOS 15.

Apple says the following about this:

Personalize your iCloud Mail address with a custom domain name, and invite family members to use the same domain with their iCloud Mail accounts.

It is not yet entirely clear how it will work exactly. In any case, it is possible to invite other family members to use the same domain. You may need family sharing to share the domain with other family members. For example, it is not yet known whether there is a limit to the number of domains you can create. We think Apple will set some restrictions, but nothing is known about that yet.
