In the last 24 hours alone, 52 people have been arrested after immigrating to Lithuania illegally via Belarus, Swedish Radio reports.

These are people who come from Iraq, Belarus and Czech Republic.

The Lithuanian government now suspects that President Alexander Lukashenko is involved in more immigrants trying to enter the EU.

– It seems that Belarusian officials are potentially cooperating and participating in a organized flow of illegal immigrants, Lithuanian Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė said earlier this week.

On Thursday, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte appealed to the European Commission for help in guarding the border.

Aleksandr Lukashenko warned last week to take revenge on the EU, if sanctions are imposed on Belarus, by letting in immigrants.

– We stopped drugs and migrants. Now you can eat and catch them yourself, he said.
