We hardly watch TV traditionally anymore. Streaming video services such as Apple TV + (try for free), Netflix, Disney + and Amazon Prime Video are more important than ever. But local providers such as Videoland, Film1 and Ziggo also have plenty to offer. More series are added every week and it is nice if you know which series, films and documentaries really stand out. We have therefore made a selection.

De Oost

To be seen at: Amazon Prime Video

Indonesia, 1946. Johan (Martijn Lakemeier) is a young Dutch soldier who, together with over a hundred thousand others, is sent to put things in order in the Dutch East Indies; during the war of independence. Gradually Johan falls under the spell of the charismatic army captain Westerling, nicknamed The Turk (Marwan Kenzari). When the war escalates and De Turk beats down the resistance of the population more and more mercilessly, the line between good and evil becomes increasingly blurred for Johan.

Yet this film has already evoked mixed feelings. Filmkrant writes: & ldquo; It was expected that a Dutch film would finally appear that would do justice to the atrocities that Dutch soldiers committed during the Indonesian War of Independence. The East is indeed gruesome, but in the Indonesians, the victims of the Dutch terror, the film hardly seems interested. & Rdquo;

The Underground Railroad (S01)

To be seen at: Film1

The Underground Railroad tells the story of Cora Randall (newcomer Thuso Mbedu) desperate quest for freedom during Antebellum South. After fleeing the Georgia plantation to pursue rumors about the Underground Railroad, Cora discovers not just any thing, but a railroad full of engineers and conductors, and a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the southern soil. During her journey, Cora is chased by Ridgeway (Joel Edgerton), a bounty hunter who is determined to return her to the plantation she fled; especially since her mother Mabel is the only one he never caught. As she travels from state to state, Cora grapples with the legacy of the mother who left her behind and her own struggle to achieve a life she never thought possible.
