In Milan & egrave; the experimentation of a new advanced mobility solution has begun; which aims to revolutionize the way to move in the urban environment. The Municipality of Milan, ATM and the Politecnico di Milano, together with Vodafone and IBM, presented the innovative & quot; Tech bus & quot ;. It is a trolleybus that integrates hybrid cloud technologies connected to the 5G network for assisted driving . The ultimate goal is to make public transport more safe using the latest technologies, thus opening; the road to autonomous driving. It will take & agrave; time, patience and a long experimentation but, in the future, the trolleybuses will be able to move completely automatically.

TECH BUS

It starts from a trolleybus of the ATM fleet on the trolleybus line 90/91 . In particular, sophisticated instruments have been installed on board this vehicle to allow dialogue and a continuous exchange of information between the vehicle and road infrastructures thanks to the Vodafone 5G network and the IBM application interfaces based on the IBM Watson IoT open integration platform. It is therefore a communication system of the V2I type (Vehicle to Infrastructure).

The trolley bus will be recognizable thanks to a specially made livery that is characterized by the use of colors that represent technological evolution, indigo and blue, and sustainability; environmental, green. In this first phase of the experimentation, the aim is to optimize the mobility processes; towards an assisted guide in the management of traffic lights and intersections, to improve regularity; and the frequency of circulation of vehicles.

The connectivity & agrave; 5G will coat; an important role as it will allow; the continuous availability; of additional information to the on-board systems and the driver. The instruments on the ground and on the vehicle will allow a continuous transmission of information between the road infrastructures and the vehicle in motion, guaranteeing the creation of a spatial map of vehicles and any pedestrians and bicycles in transit . All this to provide the driver with additional information to improve safety. The devices for data storage and connection with the trolleybus will be installed progressively along the route also on street lamps, traffic lights and shelters.

In this first test phase, the instruments installed at the shelters will allow the driver to know how many people are waiting, if the area around the stop is fully accessible and what the flow of passengers getting on and off the trolley bus is. Also & egrave; It is possible to send information on the vehicle's loading status from the trolley bus to the shelter. Furthermore, this platform will allow; drivers also get to know the status of the traffic lights along the route, recommending the speed; to keep to always find green.

The driver will be able to & agrave; receive information on the presence of obstacles obstructing the route, or on vehicles arriving at the next intersection. For experimentation & egrave; 90/91 line was chosen because & eacute; most of its route is located within a dedicated preferential lane. The route is already there; ready for testing & egrave; that of viale Abruzzi. If all goes well for the best, within two years the project will be; progressively extended to other trolleybuses running this line.
