Beware: hidden developer mode for AirTag can make tracker unusable

If you're experimental, you can venture into the newly discovered developer menu of the AirTag. In the current version of iOS (iOS 14.5.1), a hidden AirTag menu for developers is hidden. With that you can manipulate the Precision Search feature, but it can also make your AirTag unusable.

Making adjustments in this hidden developer menu of the AirTag is entirely at your own risk . The wrong settings can cause the precision search function to not work at all or not to work properly. iCulture is not responsible for nor provides further support.

AirTag hidden developer mode

The menu was discovered by accident by a Reddit user. To activate the menu, go to Accurate Search (Open Find My app> Choose AirTag> Search nearby with green arrow) and then tap the name in the top left corner five times in quick succession. The AirTag's hidden developer menu will appear. This only works on iPhone 11 and later, as it uses the U1 chip.

You can adjust all kinds of settings in this menu (again, at your own risk ). For example, you can adjust the blur of the camera (so that, for example, you can get your own surroundings in focus when searching), but there is also a hidden Eco mode. It is not known exactly what this does. You can also adjust the amount of dots that appear on the screen before the connection to the U1 chip is made. You can make the menu disappear again by tapping the name five times again.

Restore default setting
Is something going wrong? The default setting for the dots is 150. With other settings for the dots, the function does not seem to work (properly). You can also switch between proximity mode and interactive mode, but we don't recommend experimenting with this. In the middle of the screen you can adjust the sliders to change settings. You can reset this by tapping on the values at the front left. Below you can see what the default settings are, should something go wrong. So make sure the AirTag at the bottom of this screen is set to Proximity Mode. Also turn off Eco mode.

It is unclear whether this menu is still available by mistake or whether Apple deliberately incorporated it into the public version of iOS. Apple could use this for support should something stop working properly with the AirTag. We think that this menu was not intended for normal users and that it will be removed in a subsequent software update.
