Nobel prize winner for 2018 and 2019 to be announced
For the first time in decades, the Nobel prize Committee honored two authors: the Polish of Olga Tokarczuk and the Austrian Peter Handke. With Tokarczuk, Born in 1962, the Jury decided to go for one of the most renowned authors in Poland. Their works on the theme of often the Polish-German-Czech borderland, have already been awarded several times and translated into many languages. The film adaptation of her novel “the song of The bats” by Agnieszka Holland, was awarded at the Berlinale in 2017, with the Silver bear.
The Austrian writer Handke is, the 14. German-language author who was awarded a Nobel prize for literature. Previously, among other things, Herta Müller and Günter Grass had been honored. The 76-Year-old is considered a controversial author, he was known in 1966 with the furious Text “Publikumsbeschimpfung”.
The prize was awarded this year to two, since the Swedish Academy in 2018 was due to allegations of sexual harassment, rape, corruption, and breach of the duty of confidentiality unable to act. It was triggered probably the most serious crisis in the Academy by revelations about Jean-Claude Arnault, husband of former Board member Katarina Frostenson. He is said to have harassed the Academy members, their wives or daughters, in one case, he was convicted of rape.
In consequence of the self-destructive way of dealing with the scandal, a number of outputs of the original 18-member body, followed, until it so was not occupied, that it was more of a quorum. The award of the Nobel prize for literature in 2018 was finally exposed.
“There are blue spots”
A new Jury should address it this year. Carefully a large number of new members – Swedish writer, Translator, and philosopher – was selected, the last only in may of this year. Specifically, the Swedish king Carl Gustaf even changed the articles of incorporation, as the Academy members were actually elected for life.
“It’s been painful. There are bruises,” admitted Mats Malm at the book fair in Gothenburg. The historian of literature and Translator, is one of the new members, and now Permanent Secretary of the Academy. New this year is also five external consultants, writer, literary critic, and Translator who should, in addition, provide for new, independent Wind at the time of decision-making.
Divided Attention
Now have to share, however, two writers of the world to this venerable Literaturtag. “The prices and the winners of the 2018 and 2019, to be valued equally, and we believe that the attention and the glory will be plenty for both of them,” said Malm. Finally, it is not just the recognition of a single Person, but of the appreciation of world literature. Both authors will receive prize money of around 830,000 Euro. He is awarded the Nobel prize for literature, together with other Nobel prizes on December 10. December, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel.
Who exactly is to choose from stand that remains traditionally used for 50 years under lock and key. According to the news Agency DPA, the number of candidates is at least known: For 2018 it 194 should be, for this year, 189 have been.
