Manila: relocation due to the flood – a curse or a blessing?
More and more people are moving in search of an income to Manila. In the Philippine capital of 15 million people, a third of them live in Slums. Their makeshift huts are often in close proximity to the water. The residents live in constant fear of Flooding. Increasingly frequent storm surges following typhoons, as extreme weather events increase due to climate change significantly.
The slum dwellers are also part of the problem: The garbage you leave behind, clogs the Outflow channels and their stilt houses are blocking water ways. Now the residents are to be relocated. For more than 100 people has improved life as a result. They live in apartments for which they pay less rent, because they regularly collect trash on the river banks. But the remaining slum dwellers are facing a possible relocation rather skeptical.
