Cosmic Sound – Brian Eno

Somewhere out there is a small “Brian Eno floating around” – who can say of himself? Researchers have named an asteroid after the famous British musician. For the new edition of the “Apollo”album, Eno at the end of June to the science and art festival “Starmus” in Zurich, with the Stephen Hawking – medal was awarded. The award for science communication, musician and producer for his “contribution to the popularization of science got”.

DW: What memories do you have of the moon landing of 1969?

Brian Eno: I was just finished with the study of art and lived in London, right next to my old painting Professor. We sat in his kitchen and stared at the small TV. As it was evening, a full moon in the sky… As you are now so… The are really there!

That was an incredible Moment in which all seemed to condense. And of course, I knew that this was a historic moment in the history of mankind. Although the Apollo missions were military, technological, and industrial projects – they were at the same time a work of art. The idea was: Hey, we can do this!

How has she influenced as an artist and a musician?

I have now started to head over to make space music. But at the time I worked with electronic instruments. And the Sounds I’ve produced with it, sounded unearthly. I’ve always thought about the universe, about galaxies, the Void of space.

And then I realized that in the universe, largely in silence. The only place where there is noise, the earth. You need an atmosphere for it. We are, therefore, the noise in the universe. As far as we know, there is no other noise source – except for us.

If space is silent: How do you translate into music?

If you are using a Sound with a very long reverb, it sounds to space. That is why there are all these effects in the history of music: “Space Echo” and “Space Chamber”. But of course in space there are no Echo and no Sound.

How the space sounds, is solely in our imagination. We only know that it is very large. I then thought of at some point: compose and make music, is actually quite unusual – human – ability. Why do we do this? This is strange. I think part of the reason for this is that we want to Express: I’m here.
