Candidate-freestyle at the US-Democrats, part 1: The first ten candidates have a live debate on TV – under the critical eyes of the barbel hunters at the Public Viewing in the “Red Derby”. By Carla Bleiker, Washington.
Wednesday Evening, At 19:30. The “Red Derby” Bar in Washington’s Columbia Heights neighborhood is filled for a day of the week well. It is loud, in the Background, rock music, and the guests can entertain themselves with fries, burgers and beer.
The mood is, as before, the Transmission of a football game. But the guests in the “Red Derby” didn’t come together this evening to cheer their team, but in order to follow the first Showdown of the applicants for the Post of democratic presidential candidates. Unusual? Not in Washington, DC.
“This is such a DC thing,” says Sandra, an African-American student who together with three Friends, to the Transmission of the debate in Miami to look at. Even congressional hearings would be broadcast in Bars. “With a large audience, it makes fun, the reactions of others to look at.”
The first 10 presidential candidate of the Democrats in TV debate: All want to beat Trump
For a good atmosphere and the drinks on offer to ensure. The Bar owners, David and Sasha Leven have set up special Drinks on the card: There are the “Blue Wave Punch” – a tropical mix of Rum, named in reference to the party color of the Democrats and their “blue wave”, to flush in November 2020 Trump from the White house and a democratic majority to the house of representatives. Also on offer: The “Miami Mix-Up” that contains, among other things, vodka and peach schnapps and Cocktail “Closing Argument” to the German “final plea”.
The Drinks will show effect: As of 21 PM, the Logo of the Democrats debate on the video screens in the Bar appears, breaks out cheering. Now, let’s go’ – at least halfway. The sound wants to hear, not really, no one can, what the moderators and the candidates had to say. “Louder!”-Calls come from several sides. Capital-Journalist Brandon laugh. “The fit to the ‘Red Derby’,” said the young man, who often comes in the Bar. After a few minutes the volume is high enough and the guests can follow the debate.
Twenty debating the end of two rounds
Ten candidates compete this evening, and a further 10 candidates on Thursday evening is your Chance. Debate is two hours long. The 20 applicants, and still more that have not collected enough votes or donations in order to qualify for the debates this week have one thing in common: each of them wants to beat in the presidential election in November 2020 Donald Trump.
Applicant Warren: According To Ester, Cheers
In polls, Obama’s former Vice-President, Joe is currently Biden on the front. Also Bernie Sanders, who lost the 2016 candidacy of Hillary Clinton, to occur again. Both men can prove themselves, but only in round two on Thursday.

But Beto O’rourke is not the Star among the guests in the Bar in Washington. This role Elizabeth Warren to fall. Sandra says, Warren was their favorite. So, Becca and her friend Kensey in this debate are also “Team Warren”.
On the question of whether most guests support this evening the candidate for U.S. conditions, rather left-wing ideas, says Kensey, with a Grin: “Yeah, this is a socialist Bar!”
Video screen at the Red Derby Bar: fish as a meditative alternative program
Properly happy guests can’t, however, also an applicant, Warren. More and more people of the video, contact screens in the “Red Derby” and ignore the debate. It certainly helps that the picture and sound fail from time to time. At some point, the organizers give up on a Video-projector completely and show instead of the armed Democrats a meditative alternative program: fish in an Aquarium.
Sandra and her Friends have started a drinking game where every Time a candidate Trump mentioned, or eye-roll, a SIP of their Cocktails to take. But also don’t want to really lift the mood. Maybe they had to change a rule: “We will drink, if a woman breaks a man,” suggests the student. “Conversely, we would be drunk too fast.”
As the debate of 23 watch to the end, left many of the guests already. “It was very tame,” says Becca. But you and other policy-Junkies can look forward to on the second round with Bernie, Biden and the eight other candidates on Thursday.
