Knobloch: “Jewish life with police protection,”

Deutsche Welle: Ms. Knobloch, you have spoken on the occasion of the Holocaust remembrance day in front of the European Parliament and the strong words to the anti-Semitism chosen. How bad is it order currently the subject of in Europe?

Charlotte Knobloch: We face today a very open anti-Semitism. Not only in Germany but in almost all European countries. You have to Express this clearly. I’ve tried to present today, in the short time available to me.

We are witnessing anti-Semitism, where people think today – I can tell now only about Germany, if you leave the country, if they can still feel safe. These questions are brought to me. It is a Situation that I have not liked and I have never thought that I will experience here.

“The debt is not inherited”

What is the role of because nowadays, the Holocaust in the consciousness of Europeans, particularly young Europeans?

I can only speak of the young people with whom I have – especially in the education areas. They are very interested to learn what has for a past of their own country. And in contrast to earlier, where you have with a debt-loaded felt – that was in the classroom just a big mistake -that you are interested in many young people today. The debt is not inherited. Maybe would have been interested sooner more people for the story, if they had already been taught correctly.

“Jewish life under police protection”

Here in the European Parliament, representatives of the AfD or the National Front, which also play happy times with the anti-Semitism and provoking to sit. What is your message to these members?

This anti-Semitism charged to us as a Jewish people in Europe, not only in Germany but also in other countries. It is a Jewish life under police today provided protection. You have to let melt on your tongue, the Form in which our children grow up. I can only say for our area, but there are children who go every day under police protection in school or nursery or secondary schools.

Charlotte Knobloch: policy, trade unions and the Church, to leave Jewish communities in the lurch

This is, of course, for us, a very great burden, because we get to hear from Jewish people that you want to know the extent to which they have in Germany also a future. And it is in other European countries the same.

What are the claims on the policy, in order for the changes? The need for anti-discrimination work done?

I don’t do because only the policy of one charge, I’m there, the churches and the trade unions, allegations, and various other groups that you keep Sunday talk, but the word to the people I’m missing. Because of the large Outcry is missing. We feel very alone. And the people who are thinking of leaving Germany, feel no empathy for. And, I think, is a big issue that should change. Sunday isn’t just enough.

“Speeches are not enough”

What are you hoping for specifically? An Outcry, would that be sufficient? It would reach the people, the comment on the street anti-Semitic?

We have in the autumn in the Eastern part of our country’s important elections, and if the voters can’t see that he chooses wrong, then he needs to be in the know and informed. For me, that is the Outcry, I ask.

More educational opportunities are needed.

All sorts of things are necessary! For me, the main thing is talking with people. Since the churches are engaging with the trade unions and various groups that are able to people. You don’t do it. This is what I’m missing.

The interview was conducted by Tim look at the mountain and Lars Scholtyssyk.

Charlotte Knobloch was from 2006 to 2010, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany and previously for ten years its Vice-President. She was also Vice-President of the world Jewish Congress (WJC) and the European Jewish Congress (EJC).
