And then there were three: The IOC Executive cancels a Turkish interested parties from the circle of potential organizers of the Olympic winter games of 2026.

The Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommends the canadian city of Calgary, in the Italian Region of Milan/Cortina d’ampezzo, as well as the Swedish capital of Stockholm as the venue for the winter games in 2026. The IOC President Thomas Bach said on Thursday, after a meeting of the Board in Buenos Aires. Thus, the Eastern Turkic city is Erzurum from the race. The official decision on the three candidates may still apply to host the games, should come early next week at the IOC meeting in the Argentinian capital. The recommended candidate had a great winter sport experience, and a good infrastructure, said IOC Vice-President Juan Antonio Samaranch jr. The Turkish prospect Erzurum did not, however, a lot of experience in winter sports. “Maybe you should have a Championships once the world in various disciplines and align youth Olympic aligning games and learning,” said Samaranch.

Only last week, Turkey had pulled in the race to host the European football championship in 2024 against Germany the Shorter. In view of the escalating costs and the ever more frequent lack of support of the population for the alignment of the Olympic Games or other major sporting events, are in future to apply new rules and requirements for the venues. “In the past, we have demanded of the cities that you fulfill our conditions,” said IOC President Bach. “Today, we ask ourselves how we can use the Olympic games to the possibilities of cities and regions to adapt.”
