As a Dirty Dancing 30 years ago in the cinema came, no one would have suspected that the Film would become the most popular woman film in the world. For the 20th time. Anniversary of the cinema starts, which were sold ten million DVDs of the blockbuster – previously, it was already the first Film, had cracked the 1 Million mark for the DVD sales. That was not enough, the Musical Version of the film already broke the pre-sale, in London in 2006, all of the Ticket records. In 2007, an international survey revealed that “Dirty Dancing” is the most popular Film among women. And you look at it like several times.

Since then, film scratching, critics wonder: What makes “Dirty Dancing” through the decades so successful? In a veritable Ode, which Israel titled-American journalist Irin Carmon, appropriately, with “”Dirty Dancing, the best movie of all times”, she writes: “It is a great, brave movie for women.” Jennifer Grey would embody in the role of “Baby” a strong-willed, idealistic woman with her own interests. “You do not need to change for the man – even if she does throughout history, a Transformation from a clumsy wallflower to a self-conscious stage dancer,” writes Carmon.

“Baby” jumps in for a Penny, which fails because of an abortion

This is perhaps the reason why so many women with the movie could identify the heroine is both at the same time: ordinary and yet extraordinary. And a woman in matters of love, the Say.

More than a mere Romance

The superficial story of “the Ugly duckling learns about the great love” have helped the Film, certainly his commercial success, Carmon. But “Dirty Dancing” is more than a Coming-of-age story or a Teenage summer romance. In essence, it is a view of the 1960s, growing up in the United States, including the then-prevailing class distinctions.

So the doctor’s daughter, Baby, fall in love during a family vacation in the upmarket Kellerman’s Resort in Johnny is hired, a dancer of the working class, to entertain the guests. An age-old Plot: to fall in love with someone who comes from the “wrong” family, is as old as the story of Romeo and Juliet. Some movie critics were in 1987, before the cinema release, therefore, sympathetically.

Also successful as a Musical. Here at Admiral Palace in Berlin

For the screenwriter and producer Eleanor Bergstein much more too, but also in the love movie. You are placed in the Plot is a subtle allusion to the theme of abortion, which was nevertheless so Central, that they could not be removed anymore from the movie. Although not mentioned explicitly, it is clear that the dancer is pregnant and decides to have an abortion in the case of a traveling doctor to perform a procedure that was in 1963, in the United States illegally. Excited neither the Studio were from this part of the story-holder, nor the lenders. “The Studio said to me: ‘Okay, Eleanor, we are paying You, so You go back in the cutting room, and the abortion scene out of cut’,” recalls Bergstein, in an Interview in “Bust”magazine.

The topic of abortion in the year 1963

“I had always suspected that this day would come and was prepared accordingly. I replied, ‘I would really like to do, but if I cut the scene out, collapses the whole story. Then there will be no more reason why Baby for the dancer Penny should step in and accordingly, you would not dance with Johnny and not fall in love with him.'”

The political overtones did not deter the Mainstream audience. Most who watch the movie again and again, to be found in the story and cheer: A summer in the countryside. The music and the Dancing. Obstacles overcome. Learn to fly, and from family constraints, free. A classic Coming-of-age, holds the audience. Or how the main actor Patrick Swayze once said: “This is a Film that will never die.”
