Defence Minister opens Cyber Command krijgsonderdeel

Minister Hennis-Plasschaert of Defence last Thursday, officially the new krijgsonderdeel Defence Cyber Command opened. The unit in addition to defensive tasks also offensive capabilities such as attacking enemy computer networks.

The Ministry of Defence sees the Defence Cyber Command unit, which is an earlier task force followed, as the fifth domain of the Dutch army, the next navy, army, air force and marechaussee (military police). Formally, it is the unity among the Royal Army.

Primary activities of the Defence Cyber Command to continue to the secure military networks and intelligence-gathering, but the unit also gets offensive tasks, such as disrupting enemy networks via cyber-attacks. For that purpose, fourteen soldiers trained in the handling of hacktechnieken. In addition, a total of sixty new employees for the Cyber Command unit attracted, while last year it already became clear that the Dutch army also hackers want to recruit for the part.

Experts say that both offensive and defensive capabilities are necessary for modern militaries. Countries may not only be attacked by other nations, and also for the effective combat of terrorism would be a unit as well as the Defence Cyber Command. Further cooperation with friendly countries is necessary. This commitment forms part of the Defence outlined strategy.
